At its 2026 global press conference in Japan, Honda unveiled a next-generation sedan prototype. The model will come powered by a new-gen hybrid system and is expected to launch in North American markets by 2030.

  1. New Honda sedan to have an all-new hybrid system and platform
  2. Honda’s next-gen ADAS tech to arrive on new models from 2028

“Honda will reallocate more development and production resources into hybrid models to accelerate the market launch ahead of the original schedule and increase the number of compelling products,” said Toshihiro Mibe, global CEO of Honda Motor Co Ltd.

Honda’s new hybrid-powered sedan: What to expect?

New hybrid system promises 10 percent increase in fuel efficiency

Honda stated that new models (including the sedan) from 2027 would be powered by an all-new hybrid system and sit on a new-gen platform. It says that the new-gen twin-motor hybrid system has increased driving efficiency by “expanding the range where the engine operates most efficiently”. With this change, Honda is expected to improve fuel economy by “more than 10 percent, whilst reducing system costs by 30 percent”. Additionally, it claims that a new electric AWD unit will lend a “highly precise and responsive” motor control.

The carmaker also mentioned that an in-house-developed, next-generation ADAS system would be part of its hybrid-powered line-up from 2028. The system will “assist the driver with vehicle operations such as acceleration and steering throughout the entire route to their destination, seamlessly on both expressways and surface roads, based on driver inputs to the navigation system”.

The new hybrid sedan reveal comes at a time when the carmaker has changed its strategy, scrapping the 0 Series SUV and sedan in the face of a challenging business environment.

The sedan prototype comes with a distinct fastback look that takes cues from the Accord sold overseas. The front end features a split headlamp design, the bumper gets a dual-tone look with wide air inlets, and Honda’s new emblem is placed above the black-finished grille. The side is characterised by flared wheel arches, a sloping roofline, sporty alloy wheels and a prominent shoulder line. The rear comprises a high-mounted stop lamp, a bumper with black finishing and wraparound connected LED tail-lamps, with a black trim in the section above the tail-lamps.

Honda India to launch new compact and midsize SUVs

While Honda’s new sedan isn’t expected to make it here, the company is slated to launch a new compact SUV in 2028. A new midsize SUV, likely the 0 Alpha electric SUV, is expected to come around the same time. By 2030, Honda India plans to launch 10 new models, of which seven will be SUVs. As of now, the carmaker is scheduled to introduce the City facelift and ZR-V on May 22, 2026.

Good move; it cuts dependence on crude oil imports
I support it as it’s a greener solution than pure petrol
I’ll accept it only if it’s cheaper than E20 petrol
I am concerned about damage to my vehicle
Not good; fuel efficiency will drop even further
