Honda has officially obtained E20 compliance for its entire model range in India, which includes the City, City e:HEV hybrid, Elevate, and Amaze. The carmaker achieved this certification ahead of the government's regulatory deadline, which comes into effect on April 1, 2025, and it will mandate E20 compliance for all combustion engines (including hybrids) manufactured thereafter.

There's good news for those who own older Honda cars as well. Honda says that all of its four-wheelers manufactured from January 1, 2009, are E20 compatible. Owners who fall into this bracket can use E20 petrol in their Honda cars without worrying about durability or having to swap out parts that are prone to corrosion.

What is E20 petrol?

As the name somewhat suggests, E20 is a blended fuel consisting of 20 percent anhydrous ethanol and 80 percent petrol. Since ethanol burns cleaner than petrol, using E20 fuel results in fewer harmful emissions. However, the most prominent drawback of E20 fuel is the corrosive nature of ethanol, which arises from its ability to absorb atmospheric moisture. If used in a non-compliant engine, E20 can rot away rubber and plastic components, as well as those made from soft metals.
