A replacement for the MG Gloster, the Majestor rivals the venerable Toyota Fortuner.

MG has launched the Majestor SUV in India at a starting price of Rs 40.99 lakh. The Majestor serves as MG’s flagship ICE-powered offering, supplanting the Gloster and competing with full-size three-row SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner, Jeep Meridian, Volkswagen Tayron and Skoda Kodiaq.

MG Majestor price list

Available in two variants

Looking at 4x2 diesel-AT variants, the Fortuner is priced slightly lower at Rs 37.61 lakh, but among the top-spec 4x4 diesel-AT variants, the Majestor is more affordable than the Fortuner Legender (Rs 48.29 lakh) and GR-S (Rs 50.46 lakh). However, there’s also a standard Fortuner 4x4 diesel-AT variant that costs Rs 43.12 lakh – Rs 1.87 lakh less than the fully loaded Majestor.

The Skoda Kodiaq, starting at Rs 36.99 lakh, is also more affordable than the Majestor at the base level, but it costs Rs 2 lakh more when comparing their range-topping versions. The Tayron, sold in only one variant in India, is also pricier than the top-spec Majestor. Lastly, the Jeep Meridian has the largest price gap compared to the Majestor, priced at Rs 33.75 lakh for the base 4x2 diesel-AT variant and peaking at Rs 37.82 lakh for the top-spec 4x4 diesel-AT.

Looks much more imposing than the Gloster

While the Majestor retains the Gloster’s ladder-frame underpinnings, its styling sees a significant rework. Up front, the Majestor sports ‘MORRIS GARAGES’ lettering, a more menacing split-headlight setup comprising slim LED daytime running lamps (DRLs) and vertically oriented main units, a larger grille housing a pair of vertical LED strips and a tougher-looking bumper with a segmented skid plate.

Over to the side, the Majestor is largely identical to the Gloster, save for new 19-inch alloy wheels shod with chunkier all-terrain tyres, more generous and sculpted body cladding and different mouldings behind the front wheel arches. The Majestor’s rear end features a new connected LED tail-lamp setup, ‘MORRIS GARAGES’ lettering encased in a black section above it, bold ‘MAJESTOR’ lettering on the lower section of the tailgate, a redesigned bumper and a dual-exhaust setup (the Gloster had quad exhausts).

The Majestor’s interior gets a new all-black finish and a redesigned dashboard layout – new AC vents, an updated centre console and a grab handle on the co-driver’s side. It can be had in a 7-seat layout with a second-row bench or a 6-seat layout with second-row captain’s chairs that slide, recline and have individual armrests. Boot space is rated at 343 litres with all rows up, expandable to 1,350 litres by folding the third row.

As for features, the Majestor offers dual 12.3-inch screens, a 360-degree camera, a panoramic sunroof, connected car tech, a 12-speaker JBL sound system, 64-colour ambient lighting, two wireless charging pads, a cabin air filter, three drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport), 10 off-road mode configurations, a DPF alert and clearance system, Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) and more.

Only SUV in its segment to offer a twin-turbo diesel engine

Under the bonnet, the Majestor retains the Gloster’s 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, developing an identical 215hp and 479Nm, sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox. In our review of the Majestor, we noted that this long-legged engine is excellent for mile-munching but not so much for urban commutes – there’s a fair bit of turbo lag below 2,000rpm, and the gearbox can be slow to shift at times.
