I’m a beginner (5'6") planning to buy a bike next year. My top choice is the Triumph Scrambler 400X, which I’ve admired since early 2024. I’m torn between that and the newly launched TVS Apache RTX 300, which offers cruise control and a bi-directional quick shifter. I’ll use the bike for daily office commutes, occasional weekend rides, and some soft-trail riding. Which one should I pick — and are there other expert-recommended alternatives?

Since you are a beginner, we'd suggest that you start with something a little less powerful and easier to manage. As you've mentioned that you have an interest in mild off-road riding, the Hero Xpulse 210 would be a great place to start. It is a fun bike to ride, very comfortable in the city, and it will be a good motorcycle for you to hone your off-road skills on. Once you've gained some confidence, you can look at bigger ADV motorcycles. But if your heart is set on one of the above two bikes that you mentioned, we'd recommend you try out the Apache RTX 300.

Hi, I live in Bangalore and am looking to buy a new motorcycle under 3 lakh (on-road) and would really appreciate your suggestions. I am planning to primarily use this bike for daily commuting, weekend rides, and occasional long-distance touring or adventure trips. My wife and I are both around 5'10" tall, and pillion comfort is a high priority. Since I occasionally experience back pain, a comfortable riding posture and good suspension are very important. Also, good mileage is another major deciding factor. I'm looking for a bike that offers a good balance of comfort (for both rider and pillion), reliability, fuel economy, touring capability and ability to handle occasional bad roads or light adventure riding. I'm open to any brand and would love to hear your recommendations based on personal experience. If you've owned or ridden any bike that fits these requirements, please share your thoughts, along with any pros and cons. Thanks in advance!

From what you've described, it seems like the TVS Apache RTX 300 would be a good fit for your needs. The RTX is spacious, comfortable, loaded with features and has decent performance and fuel economy too. The downside here is that RTX waiting periods are on the higher side and since this is still a fairly new product, you may experience teething issues. Fully loaded with luggage and a pillion, its performance will also be quite modest. If you are open to extending your budget to account for the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, we would strongly suggest you go down that route. The Himalayan has excellent suspension, gutsy performance and is a proven commodity today. The only real downside is it's heft and size but since you and your partner both are on the taller side, chances are, you should be able to make your peace with it or even welcome the added space on offer. Take rest rides of both machines and see which one you guys lean towards more.

I am planning to buy a bike for office commute in Bangalore (15km per day in peak traffic), and I am inclined towards cruisers. Please advise between Honda CB350, Apache RTX300 and RE Goan Classic. Rider and pillion comfort and fuel efficiency are my major concerns. Please advise.

Since you've said you prefer cruisers and commute in heavy traffic, of the three bikes you've shortlisted, the Honda CB350 will fit your usage the best. With its low seat, light clutch action and surefooted yet easy handling demeanour, the CB350 makes for a wonderful city companion. Its engine is smooth and torquey, and when ridden sensibly, it returns very impressive fuel economy for a 350cc machine. Plus, seating comfort for both rider and pillion is also quite nice, although if you carry a pillion frequently, it would be prudent to invest in a backrest - it should be a relatively inexpensive option to purchase. The Royal Enfield Goan Classic 350 is a beautiful motorcycle, but to achieve its gorgeous form, there are some functional compromises. It is by no means a horribly uncomfortable machine, but in comparison to its more conventional siblings - Classic and Bullet 350 - it is surely a step down. Pillion accommodations, too, are mediocre at best, and the main draw here is its unique design. The TVS Apache RTX 300 is the odd one out here and will feel very different to the other bikes you've shortlisted. It has a modern, liquid-cooled engine making substantially more peak output and a 6-speed gearbox. Outright comfort will be another strong point on the RTX, and this is likely to be the most comfortable machine of the lot, owing to its form factor. We'd recommend a test ride of all these bikes before you make a decision, and you should also decide what sort of bike you want before you do so.

Hi Autocar team, I am 33 years old and planning to buy a bike. I own a 1996 Hero Honda CD100 Deluxe and currently use a 2023 Honda Activa 125 for city commuting. I want to buy a bike with good highway performance, excellent pillion comfort, and a great suspension setup. My usage includes 400 km each way on highways (800 km total) along with occasional city riding. Reliability is my top priority. My shortlisted options are the RE Classic 350, RE Bullet 350, and RE Himalayan 450. I’m open to other options as well. Please suggest a suitable bike.

Considering your long highway travel distances as well as the fact that you travel with a pillion frequently, an adventure bike should be on the top of your shortlist. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is an excellent road touring machine and if you can manage its heft and size at slower speeds, it should be a fine fit for your use case. In case you want something more affordable and fuel efficient, the 350cc KTM 390 Adventure and TVS Apache RTX 300 are good alternatives to consider. The KTM bike has been around long enough that there are unlikely to be huge surprises in your ownership journey but the RTX is still a fairly new machine. A test ride of these three is the first order of business for you and take your preferred travel companion with you to get an accurate idea of pillion comfort as well.

I am planning to purchase a motorcycle that is great for highway commutes. My primary requirements are strong service reliability, good performance, and excellent comfort. I am looking for a bike with an engine displacement between 300-400cc.

Depending on your riding style, there are multiple different options to choose from in the segment you're looking at. If you're looking for a quick and sporty machine, then the 350cc Triumph Speed 400, KTM 390 Duke and Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 make good sense because they have energetic performance as well as good comfort (the KTM bike will be a little less comfy than the Triumph bike in this one regard, but will have more performance). On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you prefer to ride in an unhurried fashion, then look no further than the Royal Enfield Classic / Bullet 350, Honda CB350 models and Triumph Speed T4. These bikes have great comfort and should also be reliable in the long run.If you want something that prioritizes comfort and utility over all else, then an adventure bike is the way to go. You have the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, TVS Apache RTX 300 and KTM 390 Adventure models (with both 350cc and 399cc motors, depending on your needs and budgetary restrictions) in this class. In our opinion, as an all-rounder, nothing can match the versatility of the Himalayan and if you're comfortable with its size, this is definitely an option worth considering. As always, first decide what form factor appeals to you the most and will suit your usage best and then accordingly take test rides based on that before making your decision.
