Audi SQ8 front-third tracking

A top-tier model from Audi’s extensive SUV line-up, the SQ8 is placed between the standard Q8 and the range-topping RSQ8. The Audi SQ8 has only recently been launched in India, with primary competition coming from the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe and Porsche Cayenne Coupe GTS, both of which reached our shores around two years ago. However, should you be looking for a newer German offering in the segment, we found out in our review of the SQ8 that there are some strong reasons why picking this new Audi will not leave you disappointed.

Power paired with precision

The SQ8’s dual personality combines exhilarating speed and effortless mile-munching

Audi SQ8 engine

While its performance may not be as savage as the RSQ8’s, the SQ8’s ability to charge towards the horizon is nothing to scoff at. The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 nestled under the bonnet develops 507hp and 770Nm of torque, which is then sent to all four wheels via Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for a 0-100kph time of 4.12 seconds. Meanwhile, the top speed is electronically capped to 250kph. The standard sport exhaust – especially in Dynamic mode – provides the requisite aural company to keep up with the build-up in momentum, while switching over to Comfort mode turns the SQ8 into a relaxed mile-muncher.

It isn’t just straight-line performance where the SQ8 impresses

Audi SQ8 handling

In spite of a 2.2-tonne weight, Audi has been able to keep the SQ8’s cornering performance in check by offering it with optional features like active anti-roll stabilisation and a Quattro sport differential. This is on top of standard fitment that includes the aforementioned Quattro AWD system, along with rear-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension. The result of all these systems is evident, as the Audi SQ8 showcases a knack for navigating tight corners and emerging out the other end in a speedy manner that hides its mass while keeping drama to a minimum.

Comfortable ride

Large wheels do not hamper the SQ8’s ride quality

Despite its heft and even the optional 22-inch alloy wheels fitted to our test car, we did not notice any discomfort while driving the SQ8. The height-adjustable air suspension of the SQ8 provides enough clearance to traverse uneven surfaces without crashing through them and bothering those on board. Buyers wishing to nudge the SQ8’s ride quality a notch or two higher have the optional active anti-roll stabilisation system to rely on, which can limit lateral movements further when driving around corners in a spirited manner. At the same time, rear-wheel steering makes driving this 5-metre-long SUV a manageable affair within city limits.

All that said, let’s now take a look at the limited but noticeable chinks in this Audi SUV’s armour.

On-board tech mishmash

The SQ8’s tech features are lengthy but with obvious omissions

Audi SQ8 infotainment system

Audi’s Virtual Cockpit display in the SQ8 comprises a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel that comes with a few version-specific display themes, but the graphics and fonts used look a touch outdated when compared to what the competition offers at this price point. Speaking of which, even though it starts from Rs 1.78 crore (ex-showroom), the Audi SQ8 does not come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Instead, users will have to rely on old-school cables for wired connectivity or opt for an aftermarket dongle should they prefer a wireless option.
