CNG cars are a viable option today, with carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors offering models with a factory-fitted kit. Vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG) have lower running costs than their equivalent petrol and diesel versions and produce lower emissions as well. Here, we list every CNG car currently in production that has been through Autocar India’s exhaustive and accurate fuel-efficiency tests.

Tata Nexon CNG

Real-world mileage: 18.55km/kg

As the only model on this list to pack a turbocharged engine, the Tata Nexon CNG develops 100hp and 170Nm of peak torque and comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. While Tata Motors claims an efficiency of 24km/kg for the Nexon CNG, our tests showed that the compact SUV returns 18.55km/kg. Nexon CNG prices start at Rs 8.3 lakh and go up to Rs 13.52 lakh.

Maruti Victoris CNG

Real-world mileage: 22km/kg

The Maruti Victoris CNG, which has an ARAI-rated mileage of 27.02km/kg, comes with the brand’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine, generating 88hp and 122Nm. Transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox. In our real-world efficiency test, the midsize SUV delivered an average mileage of 22km/kg. The Victoris CNG is priced from Rs 11.5 lakh to Rs 14.72 lakh.

Maruti Brezza CNG

Powered by the brand’s frugal 88hp 1.5-litre engine paired to a 5-speed manual transmission, the Maruti Brezza CNG has an ARAI-rated mileage of 25.5km/kg. Our Brezza CNG real-world mileage test shows that the compact SUV is more fuel-efficient than the Nexon CNG, recording an average of 22.95km/kg. Compared to Maruti’s claimed ARAI figure, that is 2.55km/kg less. The Maruti Brezza CNG is currently priced between Rs 9.17 lakh and Rs 11.46 lakh.

Tata Altroz CNG

Real-world mileage: 25.1km/kg

The Tata Altroz CNG comes with a 1.2-litre engine that makes 74hp and 104Nm on CNG, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. The CNG hatchback has a claimed mileage of 27.8km/kg, but in our real-world efficiency tests, it returned 25.1km/kg, which is 2.69km/kg short of the claimed figure. The Altroz CNG is priced between Rs 7.3 lakh and Rs 10.77 lakh.

The highest-mileage CNG car tested on this list is the Maruti Swift CNG. ARAI quotes an efficiency figure of 32.85km/kg, though our real-world tests showed that the 70hp, 102Nm 1.2-litre engine, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, delivered an average mileage of 27.87km/kg. Swift CNG prices start at Rs 7.52 lakh and go up to Rs 8.46 lakh.
