I have a budget of Rs. 12 lakh and am currently driving a Tata Tiago, which I have owned for the past 10 years. I am now looking to upgrade and would appreciate suggestions in both the sedan and SUV segments. My biggest dilemma is deciding whether I should choose a sedan or an SUV. In the sedan category, I am considering the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia. In the SUV segment, I am looking at the Tata Nexon. Please suggest if there are any better options than these as well. My driving is evenly split between city and highway usage, and I am a light user with an average monthly running of around 1,000 km. Considering my requirements, which type of vehicle would be the better choice, and which models should I shortlist?

The first thing to note is that with a Rs. 12 lakh budget, the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia may be difficult to fit in unless you're looking at entry-level variants or stretching your budget. The Tata Nexon, on the other hand, sits much more comfortably within your range.

Between a sedan car and an SUV, we'd lean towards a sedan for your usage pattern. With your driving split evenly between city and highway and a relatively modest monthly running of around 1,000km, a sedan generally offers better ride comfort, superior highway stability and a more engaging driving experience. Coming from a Tata Tiago, a Virtus or Slavia will feel like a substantial upgrade in terms of refinement, space and overall quality.

If your budget is firm at Rs 12. lakh, we'd suggest looking at the Skoda Kylaq Automatic or Honda Amaze CVT as well. The Kylaq offers SUV practicality, strong safety credentials and a fun turbo-petrol engine, while the Amaze provides the smoothest automatic experience and excellent long-term ownership appeal.

The Tata Nexon remains a good all-rounder with strong safety credentials and a practical cabin, but if your heart is set on a Volkswagen car or Skoda car and you can stretch the budget, they are the more rewarding cars to own and drive. You can expect the Volkswagen Virtus mileage to be around 9 to 12 kpl in the city and 15 to 18 kpl on the highway.

Hello, I own a 9 years old Ford Figo S TDCi (manual, diesel) that has covered more than 1.3 lakh km. I’m still proud of this car for its torquey engine, handling, and the way it drives. But lately, its hard clutch in city traffic is causing knee pain, and I am confused whether to keep it or exchange it. Does it make sense to replace my Figo now, and what resale value should I expect? Which current manual fun‑to‑drive hatchbacks come closest to the driving feel and character of the Figo S TDCi? Resale value will be modest given the age and Ford’s exit, so the decision should be driven by your usage and comfort rather than the resale number.On the replacement, there is no direct hatchback equivalent today. The Skoda Kylaq is the closest in spirit, with a strong turbo petrol engine and a genuinely engaging driving experience. The automatic is also a big plus if you want to avoid clutch fatigue in traffic. The fact that Skoda has opened a showroom in Shillong is a significant positive, and Skoda is a far more stable brand in India today than Ford was at the time of its exit. If you can stretch the budget, the Kylaq is the right move. The Skoda Kylaq price range extends from Rs 7.59 lakh to Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).If the budget is tight, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is the best hatchback alternative. It is not as powerful or as sharp as the Figo S, but it is light, nimble and fun to drive in its own way. The Honda Amaze CVT VX is a very sensible upgrade from the Nexon AMT. The CVT gearbox is far smoother than the AMT, which will make both city driving and hill climbs much more pleasant. The Amaze also offers excellent visibility, a comfortable driving position and a reliable ownership experience. However, it is a sedan, so you will lose the higher seating position and ground clearance of an SUV, which can be useful on highways and rough roads.Given your usage, a compact SUV with a proper automatic gearbox is a better fit. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza automatic is a strong recommendation here. It uses a 6-speed torque converter automatic, which is much smoother than the Nexon AMT, and it offers excellent visibility, a comfortable driving position and low running costs. But it is on the pricier side.Overall, the Amaze CVT is a good alternative if you are happy to move to a sedan, but if budget permits, the Brezza is the more versatile choice.

The AMT is one of the smoother units in the segment, making it a confidence-inspiring choice for a new driver. This Hyundai car isn't as good as the Swift when it comes to ride comfort and even rear seat space. The Tata Tiago AMT is the value pick, but the cabin and overall refinement are not at the same level. That said, if you want a slightly larger and more premium feeling car, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT is also worth considering, but it will stretch the budget. If you don't want to stretch the Swift is the most well-rounded and easiest car to live with in this range.

With 5,000-7,000 km a year and mostly city driving, you are the ideal EV buyer. The Mahindra XEV 9S in its top-spec Pack Three guise will comfortably fit in your budget. With a 79kWh battery pack, you can easily expect a real-world range of around 480km in daily driving conditions. The 9S is also a full-size SUV with three rows, so practicality is excellent. There is a usable frunk as well, and the feature list is extensive with connected tech, panoramic sunroof, front and rear ventilated seats, drive modes, Level 2 ADAS and much more. Also, with 286hp, the 9S has plenty of performance for everyday needs. The overall package strikes a good balance and hence is our recommendation.
