I have a budget of Rs. 12 lakh and am currently driving a Tata Tiago, which I have owned for the past 10 years. I am now looking to upgrade and would appreciate suggestions in both the sedan and SUV segments. My biggest dilemma is deciding whether I should choose a sedan or an SUV. In the sedan category, I am considering the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia. In the SUV segment, I am looking at the Tata Nexon. Please suggest if there are any better options than these as well. My driving is evenly split between city and highway usage, and I am a light user with an average monthly running of around 1,000 km. Considering my requirements, which type of vehicle would be the better choice, and which models should I shortlist?

It will not match your Virtus’ rock-solid high-speed stability, but for the occasional fast run, it is perfectly fine. The one gripe is that the steering does not weigh up enough at highway speeds. Being a turbo-petrol, it is also quite sensitive to driving style, so expect city fuel efficiency to be in the 10-12kpl range.If you are looking for an alternative, consider the Skoda Kylaq. It feels more planted than the Venue on the highway, and its torque-converter automatic shifts more smoothly. However, the rear seat is not as spacious.Overall, for your usage, the Venue DCT remains a sensible choice.

If you consider new tech and green energy, pick the Tata Curvv EV. With 40 km a day in the city, an EV makes the most sense - you can charge at home once or twice a week, spend far less per km, and enjoy a quiet, smooth drive in traffic. The big question is, do you have a dedicated parking spot with a plug at home or office? If yes, you’re set. You will barely visit public chargers for city use, and the range will easily cover a week of commuting.The Skoda Kylaq is still a sensible pick only if you cannot install home charging or you often do long highway runs. Petrol refuelling is instant, and planning is zero, so it is easier outside the city.One catch with the Curvv EV is its higher upfront price, patchy or busy public chargers on some routes, and a likely poor resale value. Our suggestion would be to keep it in the Skoda family and pick the Kushaq. Your 600km highway runs will feel the easiest in this one, thanks to the TSI engine's strong pull and a stable, confident high-speed feel. Coming from a Fabia, you will also like the familiar solid build, but it's still compact enough for your weekend city drives. For your usage, the 1.5 TSI with the DSG gearbox is honestly the better bet, as it has the stronger yet smoother engine, snappier gearbox and almost no fuel economy penalty thanks to clever cylinder deactivation tech.However, these variants are several lakhs outside your budget, so you might have to choose the 1.0 TSI, which is also very good. The Kylaq with the 1.0 TSI is also a good bet, but it won't feel as significant an update from your Fabia in terms of size.The Honda Elevate hybrid, sadly, does not look like it will see the light of day, as Honda is focused on bringing out its midsize EV first, and other all-new models thereafter. You could look at the Elevate petrol, however, which is plenty efficient enough on its own. However, we still think the Kushaq is the best option for you.
