F1 Miami GP schedule

Formula 1 is back after a lengthy break following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs. There’s plenty to look forward to at the Miami GP, with teams expected to bring in significant updates. Moreover, Miami will be the first race following F1’s recent rule tweaks.

This weekend will F2 race in the America for the very first time, while Formula E returns to Berlin’s Tempelhof Street Circuit for a double header.

Miami will host the second sprint weekend of the season. Given the lengthy break since the last race (the Japanese GP back in March), we can expect teams to bring in some major car updates. In fact, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has gone as far as saying the team will have a “completely new car” at Miami.

F1 has also made some tweaks to the new regulations and Miami will be the first test of these in race conditions. The maximum permitted recharge during qualifying has been reduced from 8MJ to 7MJ, aimed at reducing excessive energy harvesting and encouraging more consistent flat-out driving. Peak superclip power (during both, qualifying and the race) has also been increased from 250kW to 350kW, further reducing the time spent recharging.

Coming to the race, maximum Boost power is now capped at an added 150Kw over the current power levels to limit any sudden performance differentials. MGU-K deployment will be capped at 350kW in key acceleration zones (from corner exit to braking point, including overtaking zones), but will be limited to 250kW in other parts of the lap.

A new ‘low power start detection’ system has also been developed, wherein an automatic MGU-K deployment will be triggered for cars with “abnormally low acceleration” off the line. This will be tested at Miami, and will be adopted later following feedback and analysis.

Given all these big changes, the FIA has extended the only practice session on Friday from the standard one hour to 90 minutes.

Alongside this, he will also continue his role as the Alpine F1 team’s reserve and test driver and Mahindra Racing’s Formula E reserve driver.

Berlin’s Tempelhof Street Circuit has been a staple on the Formula E calendar since its very first season. The championship returns to the venue this weekend, for Rounds 7 and 8.

Home favourites Pascal Wehrlein and Porsche currently lead the drivers’ and team’ standings. However, Mahindra Racing has enjoyed a strong season and Edoardo Mortara is currently second overall, just 11 points behind Wherlein.
