Toyota Kirloskar Motor has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra to examine the setting up of a new manufacturing facility in the state.

  1. The plant could be Toyota's fourth manufacturing facility in India
  2. Investment, production capacity yet to be revealed

The MoU was signed today, and more details about the proposed greenfield manufacturing facility are yet to be revealed. If the plan goes through, the plant in Maharashtra will be its fourth manufacturing hub after the third plant in Bidadi was announced late last year. The new Bidadi plant will be operational by 2026, and will add about 30 percent to Toyota’s production capacity.

The proposed investment in Maharashtra, once finalised, is expected to be made over a multi-year period, resulting in job creation and economic growth in the Marathwada region. Masakazu Yoshimura, MD and CEO, TKM, said, “Toyota Motor Corporation believes that India is well positioned to become a global manufacturing hub for cleaner and greener mobility solutions. This belief was reinforced with the recent regional restructuring, which elevated India as a hub of the new Middle East, East Asia & Oceania Region.”

“Today’s MOU signing marks a pivotal point as we stride into the next phase of growth in the country enabling us to contribute to enriching lives with qualitative mobility solutions locally and globally,” he added.

Toyota’s current portfolio in India consists of Baleno-based Glanza, Fronx-based Urban Cruiser Taisor, Hyryder, Ertiga-based Rumion, Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross, Fortuner, Camry, Hilux pickup truck, Land Cruiser 300, as well as the Vellfire MPV. 44 percent of Toyota’s sales in India are actually from Maruti-rebadged products.
