Volvo EX90 is the brand's flagship electric SUV, and it sits above the XC90 in Volvo's India line-up. The Volvo EX90 rivals the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, BMW iX and Kia EV9. The Volvo EX90 launched in India on October 12, 2026, and it is  being offered in a single, fully loaded Ultra variant with six seats. It is powered by a 106kWh battery and two electric motors that drive all four wheels.

As per us at Autocar India, the EX90 strikes a fine balance between comfort, refinement and performance. It does not pamper rear passengers like the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV or match the BMW iX for power and driving excitement. However, it is just as enjoyable to drive as it is to be chauffeured in. We gave it a score of 8 out of 10 in our review.

EX90 Key Features

EX90 Road Test Findings

What we liked

  • The cabin is very quiet, with little wind or road noise even on the 21-inch wheels.
  • The air suspension handles broken roads well at speed and keeps the ride composed over city bumps. The Standard setting offers the best balance of comfort and control.
  • Built-in microphones and speakers let passengers in the first and third rows talk without raising their voices.
  • The front seats offer excellent support and plenty of electric adjustment, and all-round visibility is very good.
  • The two-tone Nappa leather feels premium, and the open-pore wood adds to the cabin's appeal

What we did not like

  • Even simple tasks, like adjusting the mirrors, need several taps through touchscreen menus.
  • The brake pedal's bite point is inconsistent, as the car switches between regenerative and regular braking.
  • The second-row captain's chairs miss powered adjustment, heating, ventilation, massage and window sunblinds. Some may also find them snug.
  • The raised floor is noticeable when you get in and out.
  • The 9-inch driver's display shows limited information.
  • The key card must be tapped at a specific spot to unlock the doors, which can be fiddly.

Who Should Buy The EX90?

Who it suits

Why?

Owners who are chauffeur-driven

In our view, it ticks the right boxes for a chauffeur-driven luxury EV. Plus, the second-row captain's chairs slide and recline.

Buyers who prefer understated luxury

The design is clean and minimal, with no chrome grille or flashy details.

Music lovers

We consider its Bowers & Wilkins system one of the best you can get in a car today.

Families of six with young children

The third row is easy to reach between the captain's chairs and is best suited to kids.

The buyer it suits least is someone who wants a sporty, punchy drive, as the EX90 builds speed gradually rather than delivering a sudden burst of power.

Volvo EX90 price & variants

There are no trims to choose between, as the EX90 comes only in the fully loaded trim, the Ultra. The Volvo EX90 price in India is Rs 1.26 crore (ex-showroom), which makes it the most expensive Volvo car in India.

At the EX90 India launch, Volvo has also announced an introductory offer for bookings made before December 31, 2026. It includes an 11kW home charger, a three-year service package and an assured buyback of 65% after three years. The Volvo EX90 price translates to a monthly EMI of Rs 1,94,356.

What should you know before buying the EX90?

  • Book before December 31, 2026, to get the launch offer. In our view, the buyback is its most useful part, since you know your resale value from day one.
  • We recommend adding the physical roof sunshade from the accessories list, as the dimming glass alone is not enough on a hot day.

Exterior Design And Engineering

9.0

The Volvo EX90 is based on the SPA2 architecture, and carries a minimalist design that remains recognisably Volvo. Its closed-off front end is complemented by distinctive LED headlights that open to reveal the main lamps, while pixel-based lighting technology can shape the beam to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic. The EX90 is slightly longer than the XC90 and rides on standard 21-inch wheels. Ground clearance is 210mm in its lowest air-suspension setting and can be increased to 250mm in Off-road mode. Pop-up door handles, minimal cladding and split LED tail-lamps further add to its clean, understated appearance.

Interior Space And Comfort

8.0

The EX90’s cabin follows a minimalist theme, dominated by a 14.5-inch touchscreen and premium materials such as Nappa leather, brushed aluminium and open-pore wood. The front seats are particularly comfortable, offering heating, ventilation, massage and extensive powered adjustment. The India-spec EX90 is a six-seater with second-row captain’s chairs, which offer good space, legroom adjustment and recline but miss powered adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage. Four-zone climate control is provided, though the lack of window sunblinds and limited sun protection from the panoramic roof are notable omissions. The third row is best suited to children or shorter adults. Boot space is 324 litres with all rows up and 690 litres with the third row folded, while a 46-litre frunk and full-size spare wheel add practicality.

Features And Safety

8.0

Most functions are controlled through the vertically oriented 14.5-inch Google-powered touchscreen, which is smooth to operate but requires too much menu navigation for basic functions such as mirror adjustment. A 9-inch digital driver display provides essential information including speed, range, battery level and navigation. One of the standout features is the 1,610W, 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system. Safety equipment is extensive, with nine airbags, five cameras, five radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors supporting a comprehensive ADAS suite. A 360-degree camera, auto-parking, door-opening alert and post-impact braking are also included.

Performance And Refinement

9.0

The India-spec EX90 gets a dual-motor setup paired with a 106kWh battery, producing 456hp and 670Nm. It can accelerate from 0-100kph in 5.5 seconds, though performance is delivered in a smooth and progressive manner rather than with an aggressive initial punch. Range, Standard, Performance and Off-road drive modes alter the character of the powertrain and chassis, with Standard offering the best overall balance. Refinement is exceptional, with very little road or wind noise entering the cabin. The EX90 also uses microphones and speakers to make conversations between passengers across different rows easier without having to raise their voices.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

9.0

The 106kWh battery has a claimed WLTP range of 625km. During the test drive, the EX90 returned around 5km/kWh in mixed conditions, translating to an indicated real-world range of approximately 530km. Regenerative braking can be set to Off, Low, High or Auto, although brake-pedal feel is inconsistent. An 11kW AC charger takes around 11 hours for a full charge, while the 800V electrical architecture allows DC fast charging at up to 350kW, enabling a 10-80 percent charge in a claimed 23 minutes. Battery pre-conditioning is also supported.

Ride Comfort And Handling

8.0

Ride comfort is one of the EX90’s strongest attributes. Its air suspension absorbs broken roads extremely well at medium and high speeds while remaining composed over low-speed bumps in the city. Standard, Firm and Soft suspension settings allow the driver to alter the balance between comfort and body control. Standard offers the best combination of suppleness and stability, while Firm improves high-speed composure. Soft can feel overly relaxed, resulting in more dive and body roll than necessary. Overall, the suspension’s ability to isolate occupants from poor road surfaces is a major highlight.

Value For Money

8.0

The Volvo EX90 will sit above the XC90 as the brand’s flagship SUV. It offers a plush and comfortable cabin, excellent materials, subtle styling, outstanding refinement and impressive ride comfort, making it particularly well suited to buyers seeking a chauffeur-driven luxury EV. However, the lack of rear sunblinds and some expected rear-seat comfort features, along with the heavy reliance on touchscreen controls and fiddly key-card operation, are shortcomings. Against rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and BMW iX, the EX90 strikes a strong middle ground between rear-seat luxury and driving ability, and makes a compelling case for buyers who value understated, minimalist luxury.

Volvo EX90 Range

The Volvo EX90 has a WLTP-certified range of 625km. In our review drive, it returned around 5km/kWh in mixed conditions, giving it a real-world range of about 530km on a full charge. Since most of our drive was on the highway, we expect the range to be higher in the city.

Regenerative braking has four settings: Off, Low, High and Auto. The Range drive mode also helps extend the distance covered on a full charge by limiting power.

Volvo EX90 FAQs

The EX90 is the electric counterpart to the combustion-powered XC90, and thus shares a similar design. However, it sits above the XC90 as Volvo's new flagship SUV while also bringing a quieter and more refined driving experience with much stronger overall performance.

The upcoming Volvo EX90 sits somewhere in between its German rivals. It isn't as loaded with rear-seat luxury features as the EQS SUV, nor as powerful or focused on driver engagement as the iX. However, the EX90 is expected to offer a strong balance between ride comfort, performance and overall cabin refinement. Its relatively understated design would suit those who want minimalist luxury over outright showiness.

The EX90's air suspension, excellent cabin insulation & refinement, and comfort-oriented captain seats in the second row make this electric SUV very well suited to be driven around in. On the other hand, the Volvo EX90 misses out on expected powered and climate-controlled second-row seats and rear sunblinds, all of which its closest rivals offer.

Our in-depth review of the Volvo EX90 found an over-reliance on the touchscreen for even basic functions like mirror adjustment. We also noted the fiddly key-card system in place of a traditional keyfob, an inconsistent brake pedal feel because of the regenerative braking system, and the absence of rear window sunblinds despite still featuring a large (albeit electronically dimming) panoramic roof.

Not quite, as the BMW iX makes 523hp and 765Nm, compared to the Volvo EX90’s output of 456hp and 670Nm. On the range front, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV's base variant has a claimed range of 820km, which is considerably more than the EX90's 625km range figure.
