Of the two SUVs, Tata Safari & Toyota Innova Crysta, which one would you recommend?

The Tata Safari and Toyota Innova Crysta are 6/7 seaters but are fundamentally very different kind of vehicles.

The Tata Safari is an SUV that uses a front-wheel drive layout and monocoque construction. It is significantly more modern than the Innova Crysta and packs in more tech and features. This Tata car also got a more powerful engine that delivers stronger performance.
A light steering also makes it easier to drive than the Innova Crysta in the city. Terrain modes do give it some rough road ability, but it is not an off-roader, and in some scenarios, its front-wheel drive layout might not be able to cope with slippery terrain as well as an Innova Crysta.

The Innova Crysta is an MPV with a rear-wheel drive layout and body-on-frame construction. Body-on-frame construction is generally more robust and better suited if you have to go on rough roads frequently. Also, rear-wheel drive helps when driving uphill, especially with a full load of passengers. The Innova Crysta makes for a good long-distance vehicle and is known to be reliable and efficient.

Your choice of model essentially boils down to what you require. While both vehicles offer good comfort for all three rows of passengers, the Tata Safari is more modern and will be the better choice if you spend most of your time driving in the city.
However, if the majority of your drives are long distances on the highway and over poor roads, the Toyota car is the one to pick.

I need a 7-seater SUV, and my budget is around โ‚น20 lakh. Should I go for the Toyota Innova Crysta or the Tata Safari?

At a โ‚น20 lakh budget, youโ€™ll only be able to afford the entry-level Tata Safari, while the base Toyota Innova Crysta would cost a few lakhs more. If that stretch is manageable, the Innova Crysta is worth it for its proven reliability and excellent long-distance comfort.
However, if youโ€™re looking for better value, the Kia Carens Clavis is worth considering. Itโ€™s not as large or powerful as the Tata or Toyota car, but it offers nearly as much seating space, more equipment, and an overall higher-spec package for the price.

Iโ€™m upgrading my car and looking for an MPV or SUV with a seven-seater option. My budget is โ‚น25 lakh, and Iโ€™m considering upcoming 2026 models. My monthly usage is around 2,000โ€“3,000 km. Please advise whether I should buy a petrol or diesel, and which models to consider right now.

Considering you drive up to 3,000km a month, a diesel makes more sense for you. Among SUVs within your budget, the Tata Safari offers the most comfort with enough space even in the third row. MPV options include the well-rounded Kia Carens Clavis diesel, and you could even look at the Toyota Innova Crysta. Sure, the Crysta feels old, but it still delivers on seat comfort and long-distance ability.

Iโ€™m looking for an SUV in which Iโ€™ll mostly be chauffeured but will occasionally drive myself. My budget is around โ‚น20 lakh (ex-showroom). I donโ€™t prefer MPVs, though I can consider the Innova Crysta.

Unfortunately, the Toyota Innova Crysta will exceed your โ‚น20 lakh budget. However, there are several SUVs you can consider.
The Hyundai Creta is a great option with a spacious and comfortable back seat, great ride quality, and good features. However, if you don't mind settling for fewer features or increasing your budget slightly, the MG Hector is a great option as a chauffeur driven car, and decent to drive too.

I am planning to buy the 8-seater Toyota Innova HyCross petrol variant, mainly for highway use. Could you advise on its mileage and also suggest any alternative vehicles within a โ‚น25 lakh budget?

At your budget of โ‚น25 lakh, the Toyota Innova HyCross is the best 7-8 seater petrol MPV available, especially since you can get a high-spec HyCross GX (O) variant at that price.
However, the Innova Hycross petrol mileage is not very impressive. In our real-world test, it returned 6.9 km/l in the city and 12.4 km/l on the highway.
Since you plan to use it mainly on highways, we recommend considering the Toyota Innova Hycross Hybrid or choosing the Toyota Innova Crysta diesel to avoid high fuel expenses.
