Maruti Suzuki Swift FAQs

The Maruti Suzuki Swift is known for its sorted driving dynamics, well-equipped interior and high fuel efficiency. The lower and mid-spec variants are also priced well, but the top-spec variants have similar prices to the more premium Baleno, which makes choosing the Swift tougher.

I currently use a second-hand, 13.5-year-old Hyundai Verna 1.6 diesel for my daily office commute of around 30-35 km. My annual running is less than 9,000km, but as the car is getting old, I will need to replace it soon. I am looking for a reliable, economical and fun-to-drive car for my daily mix of city and highway driving. A few months ago, I drove a third-generation Swift manual and really liked its nimble handling, slick controls and free-revving engine. However, I am a little concerned about the new Swift's 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, although I have not driven it yet. How do the Fronx and Baleno compare with the Swift? I prefer the Fronx over the Baleno purely because of its looks. I am not planning to buy immediately and can wait for a few months if there are suitable new launches coming. Rear-seat space and long-distance comfort are not priorities, as I already have a Tata Curvv diesel for family use and highway trips. I would prefer a compact car for city driving. I enjoy driving a manual, as my commute does not involve much bumper-to-bumper traffic, although I would still prefer a light clutch and slick gear shifts. As I am early in my career, I plan to keep this car for a long time, so I would also like it to be suitable for future ethanol blends beyond E20. Would it also make sense to consider the Tiago EV or Punch EV? My concerns are their higher upfront cost, which may be difficult to justify given my low annual running, and long-term reliability. I also already own a Tata car. My initial budget was Rs 8 lakh, but stretching the budget for an EV would also bring the Skoda Kylaq into consideration, although I understand it is not particularly fuel efficient. What would you recommend below Rs 8 lakh for my requirements?

Given your requirements, the Maruti Suzuki Swift remains the most sensible choice. Your running is under 9,000 km a year, so a petrol car makes the most sense, and the Swift’s compact size, light controls and nimble handling are exactly what you enjoyed in your old Verna. The new 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine is not something to worry about. It is a free-revving unit with good refinement and a light, slick gearbox, and Maruti’s long-term reliability record is strong. It is also very fuel-efficient, as it delivered 14kpl in the city and 19kpl on the highway in our real-world tests. The Fronx and Baleno are both good cars, but they are larger and not quite as engaging to drive as the Swift. You also do not need the extra space or rear-seat comfort, given you already have a Tata Curvv Diesel for family duties. On the EV front, the Tiago EV and Punch EV are worth considering, but your running is too low to justify the higher upfront cost, and you already have a Tata car in the garage. If you want to keep the budget under Rs 8 lakh, the Swift is the best fit. However, if you feel you need a larger car, the Baleno is a solid choice.

Hello, Autocar India Team. I am a first-time car buyer with a budget of Rs 6-12 lakh. I am looking for a petrol automatic hatchback or micro SUV. I am a new driver, so I want something that is easy to drive and fuel-efficient. I have shortlisted the Tata Altroz DCA/AMT, Tata Punch AMT, Tata Tiago AMT, Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT, Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT, Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor AMT and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AMT. I am confused between these options. Which one would you recommend for my requirements?

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT. As a first-time buyer, your priorities are ease of driving, fuel efficiency and a stress-free ownership experience, and the Baleno delivers on all three. It is one of the easiest cars to drive in the city thanks to its light controls and smooth AMT, and it is also one of the most fuel-efficient cars in this segment. This Maruti Suzuki car also offers a spacious cabin and a comfortable ride, making it a car you can grow into as your needs evolve. Maruti's service network and low maintenance costs further add to the ownership peace of mind. The Tata Altroz DCA is the better automatic gearbox, but the Baleno's AMT is smooth enough for city driving, and the overall ownership experience is stronger. The Tata Punch and Tiago are good value, but the Baleno feels more premium and spacious. The Swift is fun to drive but not as spacious as the Baleno and costs nearly as much. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is essentially the same car as the Baleno underneath, and if you need the additional ground clearance or prefer its looks, it is a solid choice too. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is a strong alternative with a smooth AMT, but the Baleno offers a more spacious cabin.Overall, the Baleno AMT is the most balanced choice for a first-time buyer looking for ease of driving, fuel efficiency and long-term peace of mind.

Which would offer better value for money between the Swift and Exter? I am considering the Swift HX4 and Exter VXi variants. Which one offers better driving dynamics and more space? The Swift is wider, while the Exter is taller. Which one is more spacious?

Verified

Go for the Hyundai Exter HX4. It is the better value-for-money package and the more practical car overall. This Hyundai car offers a higher seating position, better ground clearance and a more spacious cabin, especially in terms of headroom and rear seat comfort. It also feels more substantial on the road and is better suited to rough roads and speed breakers. The Swift VXi is the better driver's car with a lower seating position, a better engine and a more engaging driving experience, but it is not as practical as the Exter. Overall, the Exter is the better choice for most buyers looking for value, space and practicality.

I am planning to buy a Maruti Suzuki Swift next month. Which variant offers the best value for money, and is now a good time to book one?

Verified
2w

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Swift ZXi variant. It offers the best balance of features and value, giving you all the essentials like the touchscreen, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, auto climate control, alloy wheels and key safety features without pushing the price too high. The higher variants add some nice extras, but the ZXi is where the value sweet spot lies. As for timing, now is a good time to book. The Swift is relatively new, with no major updates expected in the near future. If you are happy with the car, go ahead and book it.
