Hi team, my monthly driving is around 1,000 km. I want to buy a diesel car, and my budget is Rs 17 lakh. Please help me select the right vehicle. I am open to both manual and automatic options.

There are quite a few diesel-manual options available within your budget. You could go for a smaller but more feature-equipped vehicle or a larger, more powerful but less-equipped vehicle. Of the smaller vehicles within your budget, the Kia Sonet, Kia Syros, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO should be on your shortlist. Among the larger vehicles, the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra XUV700 are worth a look.

As for automatic gearbox options, the best pick would be the Kia Sonet diesel GTX+ AT. The refined 1.5-litre diesel engine and smooth 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission work really well together to deliver a premium driving experience. Hyundai also offers the same combo on the new Venue, though you'll need to up your budget to get a feature-equipped model.

Hi Team. I want to buy my first car and prefer an automatic. My usage will be around 700 km per month, and I need a sub-4-metre car. I’m confused between the new Hyundai Venue and the Mahindra XUV 3XO. With respect to mileage, which of the two is better? Please suggest.

Since mileage is important to you, we would suggest the Hyundai Venue. We have yet to put the new generation car through our standard fuel efficiency test cycle.

However, given that it carries over its powertrains, we expect it to perform better than the Mahindra XUV 3XO. The Mahindra car is tuned more for a peppy throttle response, and this drops its real-world fuel efficiency.

I am moving on from a manual Tata Nexon and have test-driven the Renault Kiger Turbo Emotion and the Kia Sonet HTK Plus iMT. The Kiger is fully loaded, looks modern and has a good feel, while the Sonet offers a sunroof, iMT useful for city driving, and stronger overall road and brand presence. I’m confused because the Sonet seems like a better car but feels outdated, and the Kiger is very cool and feature-rich but might have poorer resale or other issues. Please advise.

You're right, the Renault Kiger is a modern car which is decently equipped, but its resale value isn't as strong as some other options in this segment. The Kia Sonet feels more polished overall, and it will get you more features too.

Yes, the iMT is convenient, but try getting a proper automatic instead, which will be a far more convenient and smoother option. If you want something a bit more modern, the Hyundai Venue is also an option you must consider. The Mahindra XUV3XO is also a compact SUV you may consider.

I need to replace my Mahindra Bolero Neo N10 (2022) due to a recent knee health issue, and require an automatic transmission. My priorities are a compact yet powerful car that is safe, reliable, and low on maintenance. I also want a comfortable ride for future road trips. My budget is 15 lakh. Please suggest suitable options.

Given your positive experience with the Mahindra car, upgrading to an XUV 3XO would be a good choice. It has a powerful diesel engine that is responsive and refined. It has all the latest safety kit with a 5-star safety rating by Bharat NCAP, and with a diesel engine, it offers low running costs as well.

The ride comfort is also positive, and it holds its own very well on bad roads. In your budget, you can get the AX7 trim that gets a well-equipped cabin with the necessary features.

Hi, I have a Hyundai i10, 2011 model, that I have used for around 90000 km. My average running is around 7000 km. I want a car with good average, boot space and proper safety. I intend to keep it for the next 15 years. My budget is around 13 lakhs. I have shortlisted 3XO AX5 petrol manual, Kylaq Signature Plus and Victoris VXI. Kindly advise.

With a budget of 13 lakhs, we would recommend the Skoda Kylaq, the Signature+ MT variant, which will give a good balance of performance, comfort, space, safety and features.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO has many features, but it scores low on real-world fuel efficiency, and you will have to stretch your budget to around 14 lakhs on road for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris VXI.

I own a 2015 Hyundai Creta Diesel S+ and have driven it single-handedly for over 1,00,000 km across ten years. I want to replace it with a compact or full-size SUV and have shortlisted the Elevate, Aircross and the new Dustor. I have been evaluating other cars (Harrier, Hector, Victoris and the Tata Sierra) but none have satisfied me. My on-road budget in Bangalore is 20-25 lakh. Please help me choose.

A good option to also look at would be the newly unveiled Kia Seltos. It is a new generation model with a lot of changes, an upmarket cabin and even more features added. Kia has also retained the powertrain options so should you want a diesel, you can get that as well.

If you want a bigger SUV, the Mahindra XUV 700 will also be updated to the Mahindra XUV 7XO with a refreshed look and new features in January.

Although it is worth noting that the XUV will be pushing the Rs 25 lakh mark in terms of price. The Renault Duster is also an iconic model that is set to make a comeback next month so it is definitely worth waiting for.

I want to buy another car which is spacious and comfortable and comes with an automatic transmission. I have a budget of around 15 lakhs. Which cars do you suggest?

Given your requirements of space, comfort and an automatic transmission, we’d suggest you have a look at the Citroen Aircross and Basalt. While the models aren’t very popular, they deliver with excellent ride comfort, ample space and a smooth powertrain. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine works really well with the torque converter automatic transmission. The recent updates have also made the interior experience nicer. All in all, the Citroen cars are surely worth a serious look.
Of the other options, you could consider the Kia Syros (great cabin space and ambience but crashy ride), Honda Elevate CVT in V trim (roomy interior but average refinement) and the Mahindra XUV 3XO (good on space and comfort but limited boot space).

I am in a transferable job under the central government and currently drive a 2017 Maruti Suzuki Swift VDI. I am looking for a new car or compact SUV. My monthly usage includes around 1,600 km of long-distance driving and about 200 km of city driving. My budget is Rs 10 lakh. I need a car that is comfortable, reliable for long drives, and economical to own in the long term.

Since you will be driving your car frequently on highways, you may want to consider the Mahindra XUV 3XO for its excellent highway manners and comfort. The entry-level diesel version will be efficient too, however if you don't mind opting for the turbo-petrol, you will get reasonably well-loaded mid-variants with many modern features.
Moreover, both engines are smooth and refined, and both deliver punchy performance, similar to your diesel Swift. Alternatively, you could consider a Maruti Suzuki Brezza for a fuss-free ownership experience.

I currently drive a Hyundai i20 Active that returns about 9-10 km/l for me, which I find very low. I’m planning to upgrade to a manual car under ₹12 lakh and am considering the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon, or the new Hyundai Venue. Please suggest which would be best.

We would recommend the new Hyundai Venue as it is a very good all-rounder, and you will get a well-equipped variant too.

Pick from the naturally aspirated petrol models as the turbo petrol engine is very sensitive to driving style, and its real-world efficiency is often well lower than the claimed figure.

The Mahindra 3XO is also a good all-rounder; however, it's geared more towards a peppy drive experience, and this comes at the expense of fuel efficiency, and since which is important for you, so it's best avoided.

I own a 6-year-old Kwid and want to upgrade. My daily commute is 20 km, and I also do a 300 km one-way highway trip two or three times a year. I am looking for a family car that is sufficient for five people and easy to drive in the hills. My budget is ₹10 lakh, but I can extend it up to ₹12 lakh. Please suggest a good car. Currently, I am considering the Venue, Exter, and Kiger.

From your shortlist, we would recommend the Hyundai Venue, it's a good all-rounder and will do well for your mostly city drives. However, we would also suggest you look at the Mahindra XUV 3XO as the car would offer you more space at the rear, which would be important since you have a family of 5.
Its engines also deliver a strong performance, which would be handy for you when fully loaded and in the hills. Bear in mind, though, that the mileage would be lower than the Venue's, but if your overall running is not high, this should not be a concern.
