Coming back from the USA after 15 years. I drive a Honda Accord in the USA. What would be the best first car to buy in India with all the bells and whistles under ₹15 lakh?
Welcome back to India! Since you are used to a Honda Accord abroad, we would recommend you look at the Honda City.
The Honda City is a well-rounded sedan that offers a spacious cabin, a comfortable ride, and a refined petrol engine. The top-spec ZX variant is well-equipped and comes with features like a sunroof, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, auto climate control and much more.
The City is available with a 121hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine that comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox. Honda City prices range from Rs 11.95 lakh to Rs 16.07 lakh (ex-showroom).

I am a 31-year-old lawyer looking to purchase my first car with a budget of ₹15-17 lakhs (on-road). My primary use will be a daily city commute of approximately 40-50 km. I am looking for a vehicle with a classy, sophisticated aesthetic, nothing overly aggressive or 'intimidating', and a premium, well-appointed interior. I am undecided between a sedan and a mid-size SUV. While I value the fuel efficiency and sleekness of a sedan, I am considering whether an SUV’s ground clearance is necessary for city infrastructure. Given my daily running, good mileage and ease of driving are priorities. Based on these requirements, which specific models and variants would you recommend for a professional first-time owner?
Given your requirements, we would recommend you choose between the Honda City and the Honda Elevate. Both models have understated styling and a well-appointed interior.
The Honda City sedan has a spacious and comfortable cabin, and the 121hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine is refined and peppy. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual, which has a claimed mileage of 17.8kpl, or a CVT automatic, which is claimed to do 18.4kpl. The City also has a comfortable ride quality, which will be good for your daily commute. Given your budget, you should either go for the City ZX MT (Rs 17.25 lakh, on-road Delhi) or the City VX CVT (Rs 17.33 lakh, on-road Delhi).
However, if you want the road presence and ground clearance of an SUV, consider the Honda Elevate. It's gets the same powertrain options as the Honda City, although claimed mileage is lower with 15.31kpl for the manual and 16.92kpl for the CVT auto. The Elevate also has a spacious cabin and a comfortable ride quality. Given your budget, you should either go for the Elevate ZX MT (Rs 17.38 lakh, on-road Delhi) or the Elevate VX CVT (Rs 17.30 lakh, on-road Delhi).

Which naturally aspirated car is best under ₹16.5 lakh?
There are quite a few options that fall under your budget. However, without knowing your exact requirements, it will be hard to recommend one. That being said, Honda's 121hp, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder i-VTEC petrol engine is one of the best around and stands out for its peppy nature and strong high-rev performance. This engine is offered with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic in the Honda City sedan (₹11.95 lakh - 16.07 lakh) and the Honda Elevate SUV (₹11.60 lakh - 16.57 lakh), ex-showroom.
Alternatively, there's Maruti's 103hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine that can be found in a number of models and its known for its relaxed nature and fuel efficiency. Hyundai's 115hp, 1.5-litre petrol unit is also another option that can be found in a number of Hyundai-Kia models, and it impresses with its refinement.

We presently own a 2014 Honda City Diesel as our secondary car and an Innova Crysta Diesel as our primary vehicle. Our usage is approximately 60% city and 40% highway. We are considering purchasing a new secondary car; however, upgrade options for sedan enthusiasts are quite limited. Kindly suggest suitable new car options within a budget of ₹20 lakhs.
You're right, the choice of sedans available in the market today has dwindled considerably in recent years, and the midsize sedan segment is being propped up by just four candidates. The good news is that all four of them are expected to be updated in 2026, which should breathe some life into them in the form of updated looks and more features, and whichever car you choose, we recommend waiting until the updated version is launched.
If you're a fan of the Honda City's no-nonsense approach, you'll like the new one, which will feel like a step up from your 2014 model, especially in terms of space and features. However, its single-engine option is limiting, and it is not as fun to drive as before.
The Hyundai Verna is far more versatile and gets an even longer list of features, but it too errs on the safe and unexciting side, even with its 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. Your best bets are the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus, which, with the facelifts, will get a much-needed features upgrade.
They are excellent to drive, yet spacious and comfortable, and a particular highlight is their punchy TSI turbo petrol engines. Choosing between them is a matter of preference, as they are the same car underneath, but either of these is what you should choose.

I am looking for my second car with a stylish design, best ground clearance, 5-star safety, and top features like Level 2 ADAS, tyre monitoring system, sunroof, large boot, and cruise control. My preferences are Curvv, new Duster, XL6, Harrier, or Toyota cars. Please advise which would be the best suitable option and which variant as well. My usage is about 60% city and 40% highway, with a budget of ₹15 lakh.
None of the cars you have shortlisted have Level 2 ADAS, within your budget of Rs 15 lakhs. Since this is a must-have, you may consider the Tata Nexon, which satisfies all your requirements. It includes a 5-star crash safety rating, ADAS, tyre pressure loss indicator, sunroof, cruise control, and its boot space is quite respectable too. Also, the Nexon feels tough, and its ride comfort is very good for your city and highway drives.
If you are comfortable with sedans, then the Honda City and Hyundai Verna meet all your requirements, and have a much larger boot than all the compact SUVs on sale. Between the two, the Verna feels more modern, and is a bit more refined, too.

My driving is mostly on highways. I am confused between the Honda City and the Victoris. Please advise.
It really depends on the kind of highways you will be driving on. If the surface is rough and strewn with potholes, the Maruti Victoris, being an SUV, will be a safe option. However, if the highway is wide and smooth, the City is better because it has a much stronger engine, which makes overtaking easy, and the lower stance makes it more stable at highway speeds as well.
Also, the Honda City offers a more comfortable rear seat, which is important if you are likely to be chauffeur-driven.

I am confused about choosing between the Thar 4×2 petrol, Tata Curvv, and the Honda City. Please help me decide which one to choose.
That's a very varied set of cars in your shortlist, and it would be hard to pinpoint one without knowing your specific requirements. The Mahindra Thar is a good option if you want a rugged SUV to take on bad roads. If you really like the image, if not its not better than the others as a daily driver, as the ride over medium bumps and patchy city streets is very busy. Also, the refinement, too, will not be as nice as the Honda City in particular.
The Tata Curvv will be more refined than the Mahindra Thar and will feel more premium inside, too. Plus, it will have sufficient ground clearance for most bad roads in and about the city. So this is a good buy if very rough roads are not something you encounter.
The Honda City would be best if you like to drive, as the handling of a sedan will feel better than the Thar and the Curvv. Also, we assume you live in an area with reasonably good roads.

I have a budget of around ₹30 lakh and am more inclined towards a sedan rather than an SUV, but currently there are no good options. Are there any expected this year?
Sadly, there are no all-new Rs 25-30 lakh sedans lined up for launch this year. However, slightly lower down the price ladder, we will see the launch of updated versions of the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus over the year.
There's way more choice for the same budget in SUVs with options spanning petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV powertrains as well as with two and three rows of seating, and 4x2 and 4x4.

Hello, Sir/Madam. I own a 2009 Honda City that has clocked 2.55 lakh kilometres, and I am extremely happy with it. It's like my second wife. However, due to family pressure, I am now considering upgrading to a new car. I drive around 1,500km a month, mostly on highways, and we are a family of five. The cars I am considering are the XUV 7XO, Invicto, new Seltos, Elevate, or a used Innova Crysta. I would also like advice on an automatic hatchback or compact SUV for my wife. Please advise.
Given you have a family of five, a larger car would work better to accommodate luggage as well, in case any of your 1,500 monthly kilometres are family driving holidays. Since you're used to the rock-solid reliability of the Honda City, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Invicto from your shortlist.
The hybrid powertrain of this Maruti car is incredibly efficient, smooth, refined, and very comfortable, and it should be reliable enough to last as long as your City has. The other midsize SUVs you have listed are also good, but they will not offer the same space, comfort, and flexibility as the Invicto.

I have been very happy with the Honda City and drive only about 5,000km a year. I now need to purchase a new car, but am unable to decide between the Honda Elevate and the Honda City.
The Honda City and Elevate are similar in many respects, and the choice largely comes down to your preferred body style. The Elevate, with its higher ground clearance, is better suited to handling the unpredictability of Indian roads. Its practical boot (though City has a larger boot on paper, but Elevate's boot is easier to use), high seating position, and airy cabin are added advantages. The Elevate also gets a larger touchscreen and a more modern interior layout. So we would suggest go for Honda Elevate.
