Volkswagen has pulled the covers off the ID Cross, the German carmaker’s first compact electric crossover. This car is built on the same MEB+ platform as the Volkswagen ID Polo, which broke cover in April. It was also previewed by the ID Cross concept at the 2025 Munich Motor Show. The ID Cross is available to order in some global markets, with prices starting at 27,995 euros (approximately Rs 30.77 lakh), about 3,000 euros more than the ID Polo’s.

Looks like a more rugged version of the ID Polo

The ID Cross is the second model to adopt Volkswagen’s Pure Positive design language. Its front end looks upright and rugged, with connected LED headlamps and an illuminated VW emblem, all housed within a full-width black grille section. Lower down, the bumper is fitted with generous black cladding and gets a silver lip, with subtle vertically oriented air intakes on either side.

Over to the side, the ID Cross sports chunky black cladding on the skirts and wheel arches, along with 18-inch alloy wheels. The charging flap is located just above the front-right wheel arch, and the panel between the C- and D-pillars gets a unique three-slat design. At the back, there’s a wraparound LED light bar, another illuminated VW emblem, a large roof spoiler and a muscular, well-clad bumper.

As for dimensions, the Volkswagen ID Cross measures 4,153mm in length, 1,794mm in width and 1,581mm in height. It has a 2,601mm wheelbase. That makes the ID Cross 100mm longer, 51mm taller and 22mm narrower than the ID Polo; its wheelbase is 1mm longer too.

Volkswagen ID Cross interior and features

Carries over the ID Polo’s layout and feature set

The interior of the ID Cross is identical in layout to that of the ID Polo. A 12.9-inch freestanding infotainment touchscreen sits front and centre on the dashboard, with diffused ambient light strips extending outwards from the display’s base. The squircle-shaped two-spoke steering wheel has been carried over from the ID Polo, and so has the 10.25-inch digital driver’s display.

Volkswagen has commendably included a healthy number of physical controls in the ID Cross, most prominently on the steering wheel and centre console. Speaking of which, the centre console sports a floating design like many other EVs, which frees up quite a lot of storage space. And speaking of storage, the ID Cross’s boot space is rated at 475 litres.

In addition to the aforementioned features, the ID Cross packs a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree camera, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), auto park assist, dual-zone climate control, heated seats, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, 12-way powered front seats, an auto-dimming interior rearview mirror (IRVM), and more. Optionally, you can spec the ID Cross with an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, massage functions for the front seats and a panoramic glass roof.

Much like the ID Polo, the ID Cross is available with 37kWh and 52kWh NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery options, both wired up to a 290Nm front-mounted electric motor (FWD). The 37kWh variants make 116hp in the base and 135hp in higher trims – Volkswagen claims 0-100kph times of 11 seconds and 9.8 seconds, respectively. Meanwhile, the 52kWh variants develop 211hp and boast a 0-100kph time of 7.1 seconds.

WLTP range figures for the 37kWh battery are rated at 317km in the 116hp state of tune and 306km for the 135hp variants, whereas the 52kWh unit can travel up to 427km on a single charge. Coming to charging, the 37kWh battery can be topped up from 10 to 80 percent in around 23 minutes using a 90kW DC outlet. The 52kWh pack can charge at up to 105kW DC, taking around 24 minutes for a 10-80 percent charge.
