Tesla has unveiled the 6-seater, long-wheelbase variant of the Model Y crossover in China, which the EV maker had teased last month. Called the Model Y L, it is priced at 3,39,000 yuan (or Rs 41.17 lakh). The standard Model Y with 5 seats is Tesla’s bestselling model in the country, but it has reportedly been ceding ground to newer models from domestic carmakers. The new Tesla car may help in regaining the lost momentum.

  1. Model Y L has a 2+2+2 seating layout
  2. It boasts several feature upgrades over the standard Model Y
  3. Tesla has yet to comment on the sale of Model Y L in other countries

While the Model Y L’s exterior largely resembles that of the standard EV, it features redesigned 19-inch alloy wheels, a longer roofline, bigger quarter glass and a blacked-out spoiler. Also, the ‘Model YYY’ badging on the boot confirms its higher seating capacity and extended wheelbase, and there is a new Starlight Gold colour option.

The Model Y L has a 2+2+2 seating configuration; the second-row captain chairs are heated, ventilated, and come with power-folding armrests, while the last row seats are heated only. Compared to the Model Y, a couple of upgrades have been made to the list of features, including a 16-inch touchscreen (0.4mm larger) and 18 speakers (4 more). Pillar-mounted air vents for both the second and third rows have also been added.

Tesla Model Y L battery, range and performance

751km range from 82kWh battery pack

Offered only in the long-range, all-wheel-drive (AWD) guise, the Model Y L comes fitted with 193hp front and 269hp rear electric motors. Power is sourced from a familiar 82kWh battery pack, and 0-100kph takes 4.5 seconds. Interestingly, the Model Y LWB’s 751km range on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) is 1km more than its standard counterpart, despite the 96kg heavier weight at 2,088kg. This was achieved by the EV’s aerodynamic design and new wheels, as per Tesla.
