The second-generation Kia Sonet, which is likely to be introduced in India in 2027, has been spied testing for the first time. While the spied model was wrapped in heavy camouflage, some design details from the fascia and side profile could be seen.

  1. Will be underpinned by the Syros’ and Venue’s K1 platform
  2. Bigger 12.3-inch screens, enhanced rear seat space expected
  3. Expected to be offered with a hybrid powertrain

Second-generation Kia Sonet spied: What could be seen?

The grille and alloys look similar to the Seltos'

From the spy shots, it is apparent that the next-generation Sonet will borrow design cues from the larger Seltos, which received its second-generation update in 2026. The grille design looks similar to the Seltos’, spanning one headlight to another. The headlights, however, seem to take design inspiration from the second-generation Hyundai Venue. The alloy wheel design on the new-generation Sonet’s test mule looks in line with the other newer Kia offerings. Two eyebrow-shaped LED DRLs over the headlights can also be seen.

The spy shots also reveal a clean bumper design, unlike the current Sonet. Some aggressive creases can, however, be seen on the bonnet. A sunroof can also be seen; however, it is yet to be known whether Kia will update the Sonet with a panoramic sunroof like the Syros or continue with a single-pane unit.

Second-generation Kia Sonet: What else to expect?

Will be built on the Syros’ K1 platform and will get bigger screens

It is known that the next-generation Sonet will move from its current K2 platform to the K1 platform, which also underpins the Syros and Venue. This platform is likely to address the Sonet’s rear space issue, which was resolved in the Venue with the 2025 generation update. With the new platform, Kia will also aim for a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating with the Sonet, as the Venue and Syros have already received it.

The dashboard design is expected to be revamped entirely with more premium materials and a minimalistic layout, similar to the Syros and Seltos. Larger 12.3-inch infotainment and driver’s display screens could be on the cards for the new-generation Sonet. However, it will be interesting to see whether Kia will offer a Level-2 ADAS suite with the Sonet, as such a feature was removed from the Syros with the MY2026 update.

Expected to continue with the same engines; a strong hybrid mill to join after launch

Second-generation Kia Sonet spied for the first time Current-spec diesel engine on the Sonet shown for representation only.

The next-generation Kia Sonet is expected to use the same set of powertrains as the current model. These include an 83hp 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 120hp 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and a 116hp 1.5-litre diesel engine. The manual and automatic transmission options are also expected to be the same.

That said, we have reported that Kia is working on a strong-hybrid engine for the Sonet based on the 1.2-litre petrol mill, which is likely to be introduced in 2028 or 2029 after the Sonet is launched in India. The technical details of this powertrain are yet to be revealed.
