Renault Kwid facelift vs rivals: Price, fuel-efficiency comparison

Renault has launched the Kwid facelift in India at Rs 2.83 lakh. The updated hatchback can be had in five levels of trim – Standard, RxE, RxL, RxT and Climber. It comes with two petrol engine options – a 54hp, 0.8-litre and a 68hp, 1.0-litre. Given below are the official fuel-efficiency figures for the Kwid facelift, in comparison to the outgoing model.

    1.0-litre MT21.70 kpl23.04 kpl
    1.0-litre AMT22.50 kpl24.04 kpl

As is clear from the table above, fuel-efficiency figures for the Kwid facelift have dropped significantly from its predecessor. One of the reasons for this could be the upsizing of the tyres (from 155/80 R13 to 165/70 R14) which increases the contact patch with the road which, in turn, increases the rolling resistance. Depending on the variant, the Kwid facelift has also gotten heavier by around 35-40kg, which also affects fuel economy. Now let’s take a look at how it compares with its rival hatchbacks, like the Datsun Redigo and Maruti Suzuki’s S-Presso, Alto and Alto K10.

As the Kwid is available with two engine options, its rivals can be categorised accordingly. The 0.8-litre Kwid is comparable to the 0.8-litre Redigo and the 800cc Alto. The Kwid and Redigo have identical outputs of 54hp and 72Nm of torque while the Alto puts out a lesser 48hp and 69Nm of torque. All three cars come paired with a 5-speed manual transmission only. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Kwid is rated at 22.30kpl while the Redigo does a slightly better 22.70kpl. The Alto is the least fuel-efficient model here, with 22.05kpl, but it is the only one that’s BS6-compliant amongst the three.

Now coming to the cars powered by the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engines. All of them – the Kwid, Redigo S-Presso and Alto K10's 1.0-litre engines produce identical power outputs of 68hp. However, the Kwid and Redigo produce 91Nm of torque, as compared to the 90Nm put out by the other two. All cars here also come with the option of 5-speed manual or AMT gearboxes. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Kwid 1.0-litre is said to do 21.70kpl for the manual and 22.50kpl for the AMT. This is marginally higher than the S-Presso’s but lesser than the Redigo and Alto K10.

The S-Presso meanwhile, is rated at 21.4kpl (Std and LXi MT) and 21.7kpl (VXi MT and AMT, VXi+ MT and AMT). These figures are the lowest in this comparison but the S-Presso is the only car amongst the 1.0-litre models to come with a BS6-compliant engine. The other competitors should also see a drop in their efficiency figures when they make the move to BS6, in due course. For now, the Alto K10 is the most fuel-efficient here, with a 23.95kpl figure for both, the MT and AMT. The Redigo is rated at 22.5kpl for the manual and 23kpl for the AMT.

Price-wise, the 800cc Kwid is priced from Rs 2.83-4.13 lakh. While the lower-end price is comparable with the 800cc Redigo and Alto, the top-end Kwid trims are significantly pricier.

Similarly, the Kwid 1.0-litre (Rs 4.33-4.84 lakh) is also more expensive than the Redigo and the Alto K10. However, the Kwid comes with features like the touchscreen and the digital instrument cluster that’s not offered on the others. Although the Kwid does manage to undercut the S-Presso (Rs 3.69-4.91 lakh) at the top-end, as mentioned earlier, it’s the only 1.0-litre car here to come with a BS6-compliant engine. Expect rival prices to rise as well when they upgrade to meet new emission norms. Considering this, the Kwid and S-Presso should be priced neck-and-neck by the time the April 2020 deadline comes around. This should make things in the ‘micro-SUV’ segment interesting in the coming months.

    All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi
