Porsche looking to expand line up with new fastback style sedan

Porsche is reportedly laying the foundation for its seventh model line – an electric fastback-style sedan closely related to Audi’s A4 E-tron.

●       This new model would allow it to challenge the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4.

●       Will be developed on the modular PPE platform co-developed with Audi.

●       Porsche is targeting a price of £50,000 (Rs 51.8 lakh)

The might of the VW Group is felt most strongly when the mammoth manufacturers in the conglomerate team up to flex their collective muscles. Tesla has carved out a nice comfy space in the electric car market, but the recent news about Porsche planning a Model 3 and BMW i4-rivalling sedan will have sent a few shivers down boardrooms in California and Bavaria.

New Porsche electric sedan: name, price and development

Reports suggest that Porsche will use the PPE platform, which it co-developed with Audi, to produce an electric fastback-style sedan closely related to Audi’s A4 E-tron. The two manufacturers have already cooperated on the development of the Taycan and E-tron GT, and are presently involved in the joint engineering of the electric Macan and Q6 E-tron.

Details remain scarce but Porsche is believed to be targeting a price of around £50,000 (Rs 51.8 lakh) and there is a possibility that the company might finally use the Cajun name that it trademarked way back in 2011.

New Porsche electric sedan: powertrains

Our sister publication, Autocar UK, has been reliably informed that the upcoming sedan will share key platform, driveline and battery components with the upcoming Macan EV. Like the A4 E-tron, the proposed Porsche model is likely to offer the choice of single-motor, rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrains.

New Porsche electric sedan: production plans

Porsche hasn’t yet taken the call on whether this model will go into production, and where, but sources say Porsche is building sufficient production capacity for a possible seventh model line, with a £519 million (Rs 5,375 crore) upgrade to its Leipzig plant. Models currently produced there include the Macan, Panamera and Panamera Sport Turismo.
