MG Motor will unveil the upcoming Comet EV in India on April 19, 2023. The Comet EV will be the smallest vehicle in the brand's India portfolio, and it will also be the smallest all-electric passenger vehicle to go on sale in our market. Prices for the MG Comet EV is expected to be announced over the next couple of months.

    1. MG Comet price likely to start at around Rs 10 lakh
    2. Will be feature-laden
    3. Expected to get multiple variants, range options

The India-bound Comet EV is also sold as the Wuling Air EV in markets like Indonesia. Back in August 2021, Autocar India was the first to exclusively report about MG’s plans to launch this urban electric runabout in India.

MG Comet EV: Smaller than rival Tiago EV

The MG Comet EV is based on parent company SAIC’s GSEV (Global Small Electric Vehicle) born-EV platform. It is 2,974mm in length, 1,631mm in height and 1,505mm in width – this makes its closest rival Tata Tiago EV longer and wider than the MG.

The Comet EV is a three-door hatchback, which is the only car of its kind to come with this body style. The four-seat EV sits on a 2,010mm wheelbase, and being a born electric EV, has the usual space and packaging advantages. The recent release from MG confirmed a twin-screen layout, connected car features, and an iPod-inspired steering wheel, among others.

While powertrain details are still under wraps, we expect the MG Comet EV to be powered by a battery capacity of around 20kWh. The battery will be locally sourced from Tata AutoComp and the car could have an iCAT-certified range of around 250km. The Comet EV is expected to be powered by a single, rear-axle motor with a power output of around 45hp.

    MG Comet EV: special variants

The Comet EV will be assembled in India and MG plans to give it over 60 percent localisation to price it as competitively as possible. MG will be looking to position the Comet EV as a premium urban electric runabout, which means prices are expected to range between Rs 10-12 lakh, ex-showroom.

There will be multiple variants, including a special edition targeted at young video game enthusiasts, being created in collaboration with the Indian gamer Naman Mathur.
