Mercedes has confirmed plans for the G-Class convertible’s comeback nearly a decade after the last drop-top version of the off-roader was discontinued in international markets. The open-top SUV is expected to make a brief appearance at the 2025 Munich motor show as part of an update from Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius on future model strategy.

Mercedes has released a teaser of the new G-Class convertible, showing that the drop-top will have a silhouette similar to the hard-top model, albeit with a shortened roofline. The teaser image also shows familiar G-Class design cues such as a flat bonnet, indicator units on the front wings, an upright windscreen and external rear-mounted spare wheel. However, the G-Class convertible teaser also hints at a folding roof mechanism integrated into the rear.

While technical details have yet to be released, the new G-Class convertible is likely to be offered with a choice of diesel, petrol and electric drivetrains, like the hard-top models.

Mercedes G-Class convertible: a brief history

Mercedes had first offered a drop-top G-Class way back in 1979 – it was a two-door short-wheelbase SUV that was produced until 2013. In 2017, the German brand revealed the ultra-luxurious four-door Maybach G 650 Landaulet, which was based on the G 63 4x4² and was powered by a 630hp, 6.0-litre V12 engine. The Maybach G650 Landaulet, which had a limited run of 99 units, featured a front hard top combined with a rear folding roof section, along with individual rear seats mounted at the back of the chassis.

The G-Class abroad is available with four powertrain options: the G 450d with a 367hp 3.0-litre diesel engine, the G 500 with a 449hp 3.0-litre turbo-petrol, the G 63 with a 585hp 4.0-litre V8, and the G 580 with EQ Technology that has a combined output of 587hp from four motors driven by a 116kWh battery. Mercedes sells only the Mercedes-AMG G 63 and the G 580 with EQ Tech, priced at Rs 3.64 crore and Rs 3 crore, respectively.
