McLaren is planning to discontinue the GTS and Artura models by the end of 2028, which are two of its core models. The decision comes as McLaren seeks to introduce new models to its line-up, which will also include the brand’s first-ever SUV.

Two McLaren models to be axed in two years
First arriving in December 2023, the GTS was the facelifted McLaren GT. The Ferrari Amalfi and Aston Marti DB12 rival is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 635hp and 630Nm of torque. This will be the first of the company’s core models to be discontinued, possibly in 2027.
The GTS is to be followed by the Artura, whose 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 is paired with an electric motor for a combined output of 700hp and 720Nm. The Ferrari 296 rival was revealed globally in February 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in semiconductor shortages and supply-chain-related issues that impacted the development of the hybrid supercar. While the Artura has been one of McLaren’s most popular models, it is to bow out by the end of 2028.
Upcoming McLaren models
Successor to the venerable 720S, the 750S is another one of McLaren’s core models in its current line-up. However, it could be gone in 2027 as the recently unveiled limited-run 788HS being the last iteration of this supercar. McLaren is not expected to stray away from the concept of a rear-engine supercar as it embarks on expanding its line-up, though. Powering these upcoming models will be a range of new hybrid powertrains, though further details on them are unavailable as of now.
The British automaker will develop its own powertrain for these new models. “No longer will we be only rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive cars. There’s going to be front-engined and either four-wheel drive or perhaps rear-wheel drive in the future. We don't have to be constrained by a V6 and a V8 in the future”, McLaren Chief Operating Officer Michael Straughan said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a new McLaren supercar is slated to break cover by 2028, though the brand is yet to clarify if this would be an Artura successor or an entirely new addition to the line-up. It is to be powered by a twin-turbo V6 hybrid setup capable of developing 1,085Nm of torque, Automotive News reported citing insider information. The front-engine platform used for the first-ever McLaren SUV, meanwhile, could make its way into several of the brand’s upcoming models, including a four-seat grand tourer.
