Mahindra has announced that it is ramping up production capacity for its popular SUVs to around 6 lakh units per annum in the next 12-15 months. This is to reduce the massive waiting periods for its SUVs, including the XUV700, Scorpio N and the Thar.

  1. XUV300, XUV400 production will go up to 9,500 units a month
  2. Thar production will go up to 6,000 units a month
  3. Scorpio N production will go up to 10,000 units a month

Mahindra’s overall manufacturing capacity to go up gradually

Mahindra’s monthly production capacity is set to increase from 29,000 units in Q4 FY2022 to 49,000 units by Q4 of FY2024, the company announced on Friday. The SUV brand also announced an investment of Rs 7,900 crore over a period of three years.

The targeted increase in manufacturing capacity is due to continued robust demand for existing SUVs and upcoming new launches like the five-door Thar and the XUV400 EV, and it will also crucially help the company in clearing existing bookings for its SUVs. Mahindra said that the incremental capacity will help reduce waiting periods for new launches, meet any uptick in exports, as well as mop up additional demand for its bread-and-butter utility vehicle range.

Mahindra Thar, Scorpio N, XUV300, XUV700 production to increase

The Thar's production will increase from 4,000 units a month to 6,000 units a month, the XUV300 from 5,000 units a month to 9,500 units, and the Scorpio N to 10,000 units a month from the current 6,000. Its popular XUV700 SUV, too, will see its production pushed to 10,000 units a month from the current 6,000 units.

For its EV portfolio, Mahindra will be creating a manufacturing capacity of 15,000 to 17,000 units a month, accounting for 20-30 percent of the company's total line-up. Mahindra will introduce the XUV400 EV SUV early next year.

Mahindra SUV waiting periods in November 2022

A quick check with dealers has revealed that the waiting period of the Scorpio N ranges from 15 weeks to 105 weeks, depending on variant, while the Scorpio Classic can be delivered in 12-15 weeks. The XUV700’s waiting period ranges from 4-6 weeks and goes up to 72 weeks for the top variants. The Thar, however, can be delivered in as early as 3-12 weeks.

Mahindra sees highest ever quarterly sales

Mahindra claims it is the number one SUV maker in the country, in terms of revenues, and it even inched ahead in terms of volumes in September. In the last July-September 2022 quarter, the company posted its highest-ever quarterly sales, at 1.74 lakh units, a growth of over 84 percent in SUV sales.
