Jeep has added a new 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine to the Compass line-up internationally. This new engine churns out a massive-for-its class 272hp and 400Nm of torque, making it the most powerful Compass. The same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol also sees duty in the Jeep Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee SUVs in the Indian market. This engine will also see duty on the Jeep Commander abroad, which is essentially the Meridian SUV on sale in India.

    1. 272hp turbo-petrol is from FCA GME engine family
    2. Compass 2.0T initially on sale in South America only
    3. India likely to get Compass 1.3T petrol in the future

Compass, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee use same 2.0 turbo-petrol

The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine on the Compass isn’t an all-new unit, but a tried-and-tested one from FCA’s (now Stellantis) Global Medium Engine (GME) engine family. It is available in multiple states of tune, and there’s also a hybrid setup on offer in select markets. The same engine also sees duty on some Alfa Romeo and Maserati models with a different state of tune.

In the Compass, this unit gets direct injection and a dual VVT setup, which according to the brand, helps the SUV sprint to 100kph in a respectable 6.3 seconds, and on to a top speed of 228kph. It comes mated to a 9-speed torque convertor automatic and standard full-time 4WD with Mud and Sand modes. It also gets larger 300mm brake discs and recalibrated shock absorbers.

Jeep Compass 2.0T: will it come to India?

At the moment, Jeep does not have a petrol-powered Compass in its India line-up. As reported by us last year, Jeep is working on re-introducing the Compass petrol in India. However, the engine we will get will be a much smaller 1.3-litre turbo-petrol unit good for around 185hp. This engine will only make its way here by 2025. The same engine is also expected to see duty on the Jeep Meridian around that time. Before that, the Meridian facelift will be launched in India this year.
