The Scram 440 retains the simple and straightforward character of the older Himalayan-based platform. While it does not feel as neatly finished as Royal Enfield’s newer models, build quality is acceptable and the old-school feel is part of its appeal. Small updates such as the LED headlight, new colour options and alloy wheels on the Force variant help freshen the design.

The Scram 440 offers a commanding riding position with a wide handlebar and an accessible 795mm seat height. It feels roomy and easy to get on and off. The upright ergonomics work well in traffic and on longer rides, although the soft seat can feel too thin for heavier riders over extended distances. The footpeg placement may splay your legs out at a standstill.

The 443cc engine delivers 25.4hp and 34Nm and is best enjoyed in the mid-range. It has a deep exhaust note, a strong wave of torque and a relaxed nature that suits both city use and touring. The six-speed gearbox is precise and highway cruising at 100-110kph feels comfortable. Push beyond that and vibrations become quite noticeable through the handlebar, tank, seat and footpegs.

Long-travel suspension, an upright riding position and excellent chassis balance make the Scram 440 easy to live with. It handles broken roads particularly well and feels surprisingly agile once moving despite its 196kg weight. The suspension absorbs rough surfaces without unsettling the rider, while the chassis remains willing through corners. Braking performance is adequate, although the front brake lacks feel at the lever.

The Scram 440 keeps things simple with a slip-assist clutch, switchable dual-channel ABS and an optional Tripper navigation pod. The ability to switch off rear ABS adds some extra flexibility for off-road use.

The Scram 440 strikes a sweet middle ground in Royal Enfield’s line-up. It combines old-school character, strong comfort, respectable performance and useful touring ability at a competitive price. It may feel dated in some areas, but that is also part of what makes it appealing.
