Kawasaki KLX230 expert review

Design and Quality

9

The Kawasaki KLX230 has a proper dual-sport design with minimal bodywork, a slim profile and 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels. The lime green colour gives it a purposeful look. However, the dual-tone seat attracts dirt easily. Equipment is basic, with a simple LCD display showing the speedometer, odometer, trip meter and fuel gauge. The switchgear is functional, although it misses a pass-light switch.

Position and Comfort

8

Despite its tall 880mm seat height, the soft suspension allows even average-height riders to reach the ground comfortably. The seat is comfortable for short rides, but pillion comfort is poor due to the narrow design. Standing ergonomics suit shorter riders better, while taller riders may feel slightly restricted.

Performance and Fuel Economy / Range

7

The 233cc air-cooled engine feels lively despite modest power figures. It delivers strong low-end torque, making it enjoyable both in the city and off-road. The short gearing and 6-speed gearbox add to the engaging riding experience. It cruises comfortably at 80kph and can maintain 100kph if needed. Fuel efficiency is impressive, returning 39kpl in the city and 42kpl on the highway, while the 7.6-litre fuel tank offers a range of over 200km.

Ride and Handling

8

The lightweight 139kg chassis makes the KLX230 agile and confidence-inspiring off-road. The long-travel suspension absorbs bumps well and makes rough roads easy to tackle. It also feels comfortable on everyday commutes, although the soft front suspension causes noticeable dive under braking. The MRF tyres perform well, but better dual-purpose tyres would improve its capabilities.

Features and Safety

6

The KLX230 keeps things simple with a basic LCD instrument cluster and dual-channel ABS. However, it misses features like a rev counter and distance-to-empty indicator.

Price and Verdict (Overall Rating)

8

The Kawasaki KLX230 may not offer the best value on paper, but it delivers an enjoyable and approachable dual-sport riding experience. Its lightweight nature, refined engine and reliable Japanese engineering make it a strong choice for riders who prioritise off-road fun over features.
