The 250cc engine at the heart of this collaboration is designed to comply with India’s stringent BSVI Phase 2 emissions standards and the upcoming Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFÉ) norms for two-wheelers, which will demand an improvement in fleet-wide average.

Sources indicate the CFMoto-sourced engine is compact, fuel-efficient and, crucially, engineered with hybrid adaptability in mind. This flexibility positions Royal Enfield to pivot toward mild-hybrid or full-hybrid configurations later this decade without requiring a costly platform overhaul. “This engine isn’t just about meeting today’s regulations,” said a person in the know, “it’s a future-proof solution that aligns with Royal Enfield’s long-term vision for sustainable growth.” An email sent to Royal Enfield is yet to elicit any response.

While the engine technology may come from CFMoto, Royal Enfield is keeping its signature DNA intact. The chassis, suspension and design will be entirely in-house, ensuring the ‘V’ platform embodies the brand’s timeless aesthetic and rugged charm. The partnership is strictly a technical alliance – no co-branded bikes or joint ventures are on the table for either manufacturer.

Royal Enfield’s leadership isn’t leaving this pivot to chance. Top executives, including those steering product strategy and sourcing, recently traveled to China, engaging with CFMoto and other tech suppliers during the Shanghai Motor Show. 

The mission? To scout cutting-edge powertrains, hybrid systems and electronics that can fuel Royal Enfield’s ambitious pipeline of internal combustion and electric vehicles (EVs). While CFMoto is the frontrunner for the 250cc deal, this broader outreach signals Royal Enfield’s intent to leverage Asia’s advanced component ecosystem as it transitions to a tech-driven future.

The ‘V’ platform is more than a technological milestone – it’s Royal Enfield’s bid to dominate the fast-growing entry-premium motorcycle segment. Likely to be priced between Rs 1.25 lakh-1.35 lakh (roughly USD 1,500-1,600, ex-showroom), the new 250cc models will slot below the Hunter 350, targeting first-time premium buyers and commuters upgrading from 100-150cc bikes. Expect classic Royal Enfield styling paired with modern touches like ABS, LED lighting and digital instrumentation.

Production will ramp up at Royal Enfield’s Chennai Highway Road facility, with 85-90 percent localisation to keep costs competitive and align with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative. This high localisation also underscores Royal Enfield’s commitment to cost efficiency as it eyes both domestic and export markets.

The 250cc platform is a cornerstone of Royal Enfield’s audacious goal to double its annual production from 1 million to 2 million units by 2030. It complements other initiatives, including a 750cc twin-cylinder platform and an EV program, as the company diversifies its portfolio.

A final decision on the CFMoto deal is expected in the first half of fiscal year 2026, and if sealed, it will equip Royal Enfield with a cost-effective, compliant, and adaptable engine to power its growth.

The competitive landscape is heating up. Rivals like Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor, and Honda are doubling down on technology-rich offerings in the entry-premium segment. Royal Enfield, with its potent brand equity and a hybrid-ready engine, could redefine the market. Beyond India, the CFMoto partnership and insights from China’s component ecosystem could give Royal Enfield an edge in export markets like Southeast Asia and Europe.
