The Triumph Thruxton 400 is a café racer with clip-on handlebars and has a more aggressive riding position than the Speed 400. The engine in this bike is tuned to be quicker and hit a higher top speed. It has a kerb weight of 183 kg, feels nimble, and is characterful to ride. Here is what our tests revealed.

Triumph Thruxton 400: Acceleration

Testing of the Thruxton 400 was conducted on a damp road during the monsoon season

Acceleration
0-60kph2.93s
0-80kph4.47s
0-100kph6.62s
For a clean launch off the line, we needed to switch off the Traction Control system. Acceleration felt potent from the get-go, and the tyres provided adequate grip, despite the damp conditions. With these acceleration figures, the Thruxton 400 is the quickest bike from the Triumph 400cc range.

Triumph Thruxton 400: Roll-on acceleration

The 398cc, single-cylinder engine in the Thruxton 400 makes 42hp at 9,000rpm and 37.5Nm of peak torque at 7,500rpm.

Roll-on Acceleration
20-50kph (2nd Gear)1.97s
30-70kph (3rdGear)3.19s
50-80kph (4th Gear)3.11s
With changes to the tuning of the engine and sprocketing, the Thruxton has slightly taller gears with good mid-range pull, and it is also quite tractable. In our in-gear roll-on tests, the bike surged forward quickly, proving that it can make quick overtakes when needed. There are noticeable vibrations that creep in on the bars and pegs as the bike hits the higher rev range, but nothing that ruins the ride experience.

Triumph Thruxton 400: Braking

Sharp and precise

Braking
60-0kph15.90m
Braking on the Thruxton 400 feels confidence-inspiring, where the bike comes to a halt in a controlled manner. The feel at the front brake lever is sharp, and ABS intervention is minimal. Just like the Speed 400, the Thruxton 400 comes equipped with sintered brake pads at the front.
