Following the launch of the Tesla Model Y in July, the American EV maker garnered 600 bookings for the crossover in India. With deliveries set to commence this month, it will initially be limited to Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram and Pune.

Tesla Model Y India bookings and deliveries details

Model Y bookings didn’t meet Tesla’s expectations.

So far, Tesla has received 600 bookings for the Model Y in India, of which the company reportedly expects to deliver 350-500 units. According to a recent Bloomberg report, this falls quite short of Tesla’s internal projections of saturating its annual quota of 2,500 units in India. For reference, Tesla delivers roughly 600 units in global markets every four hours.

High tariffs on CBUs severely hampered Model Y’s affordability in India.

Tesla Model Y records 600 bookings in India

The sluggish sales pace is likely a consequence of the Tesla Model Y price in India, which starts at a lofty Rs 59.89 lakh due to high taxation on CBU (completely built unit) imports. Though the government rolled out the SPMEPCI scheme in June to incentivise local manufacturing of EVs via a much-lower 15 percent import duty, Tesla is currently not interested in building its models in India, and therefore can’t take advantage of the policy.

In the larger scheme of things, data from JATO Dynamics does show that just over 2,800 EVs priced between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 70 lakh were sold in India between January and June 2025. However, the Model Y booking numbers don’t reflect Tesla’s brand appeal and high anticipation, and that isn’t helped by the EV maker’s hesitance to market itself here.

Still, Tesla continues to slowly expand its footprint in India via its Supercharger network in Mumbai and Delhi, along with plans to open its third experience centre in South India next year.
