Electric bikes in India (25)
For buyers considering an electric bike, the argument goes beyond saving money on fuel. Petrol-powered two-wheelers are increasingly affected by changing fuel norms, concerns over air pollution and, in some cities, restrictions on older vehicles. Delhi-NCR is one example: petrol vehicles over 15 years old are classified as end-of-life vehicles.
Instead of just looking at mileage and fuel costs, buyers need to think about real-world range, charging time, battery warranty and whether they have convenient access to charging. Electric two-wheelers are becoming an increasingly practical alternative to petrol-powered bikes and scooters, particularly for daily city commuting. They generally have fewer mechanical components and can have lower running and maintenance costs than petrol-powered two-wheelers. However, the electric two-wheeler market now covers a wide range of products, from affordable city-focused models to faster electric motorcycles with large batteries and longer claimed ranges.
Electric two-wheelers from a wide range of manufacturers including scooters and motorcycles are available in the Indian market. The range includes both electric scooters and motorcycles, while some upcoming models are also listed with their expected launch dates.

Electric scooters vs Electric motorcycles
Electric motorcycles are a smaller part of the market and tend to focus more on performance and riding range, as they are primarily designed for city commuting. Electric motorcycles are a smaller part of the market and tend to focus more on performance and riding range.
For a daily commute, an electric scooter can make more sense because of its easy riding experience and practical design. If you want motorcycle-like styling, higher performance or plan to ride at higher speeds, an electric motorcycle may be more appropriate.
What Should you Check Before Buying an Electric Bike?
- Real-world range: Do not select an EV only by its claimed range. Consider your daily distance and keep some reserve for unexpected trips or changes in usage.
- Battery capacity: A larger battery generally allows a longer claimed range but can also add to the vehicle's price and weight. Choose the battery size according to your daily running rather than simply opting for the largest available one.
- Charging: Check whether you can conveniently charge the vehicle at home. Also consider charging time and whether the manufacturer offers fast-charging support.
- Performance: Top speed matters if you regularly use faster roads, while acceleration and low-speed response are more relevant for city traffic.
- Service and support: Electric vehicles have fewer mechanical components than petrol vehicles, but battery, motor, electronics and software still require manufacturer support. Check the availability of a nearby dealership and service centre before buying.
- Braking and safety: Check whether the model gets CBS or ABS, along with features such as traction control where available. Autocar India's electric-bike listings include filters for ABS, CBS, traction control, fast charging, navigation and tyre-pressure monitoring.

Electric Bikes - FAQs
For riders looking for higher-speed highway capability, the Ultraviolette X-47 is among the most capable options with a 145kph top speed. The Flying Flea C6 has a 115kph top speed, while the Keeway Hypevolt-R and Avore EX2S are listed at 115kph and 114kph respectively. However, top speed alone does not establish comfortable highway cruising. Battery consumption rises at sustained high speeds, so riders planning frequent highway use should also consider battery size, charging infrastructure and real-world range.
The Avore EX2, for example, has a 154kg kerb weight, a 790mm seat height and a rear monoshock, while the X-47 uses a larger battery and motorcycle chassis. For regular two-up riding, buyers should specifically look at pillion seat size, rear suspension setup, kerb weight, wheelbase and performance with additional load.
Amongst the electric bikes under Rs 2 lakh, the Keeway Hypevolt-R stands out on paper with a 115kph top speed and 180km claimed range. The Avore EX2S is another option, with a 114kph top speed and 260km claimed range, while the Oben Rorr Evo has a 110kph top speed and 180km claimed range. These figures are claimed/official figures, so actual highway range will depend on speed, riding conditions and load.
Among the electric two-wheelers currently available for sale, the Ultraviolette X-47 has the longest claimed range at up to 323km with its 10.3kWh battery. The X-47 is available with 7.1kWh and 10.3kWh battery options, with claimed ranges of 211km and 323km respectively.
Several models can work for city commuting, depending on the rider's requirements. The Revolt RVX has a claimed 160km range and 90kph top speed, making it a lower-performance option among the models listed here, while the Oben Rorr Evo offers a higher 110kph top speed with a claimed 180km range. The Avore EX2 also offers a 255km claimed range and 100kph top speed. For predominantly urban riding, buyers should also consider seat height, kerb weight, charging convenience and low-speed response, rather than choosing purely on claimed range.

Charging issues for EV scooter, never seen any public charging facility exclusively for electric scooter unlike for cars seen at petrol pumps or hotels
I am 48 years old and want to buy a reliable electric scooter for short city commutes. My key requirements are excellent ride comfort over rough roads, good ergonomics and seating, and a setup that will not cause back pain. I also want good reliability and serviceability in South India. My daily commute will be a maximum of 10km. Fast charging would be a bonus. Which electric scooter would you recommend?
Given your requirements, we'd recommend you choose between the Ather Konarc, River Indie, and the TVS Orbiter. The Konarc and Indie are quite a bit more expensive than the Orbiter but also offer a more polished overall experience. A test ride of all three should help you decide which is the best fit for your needs.
I’m 63 and rode a Bullet and Sherpa from 1979 to 2010, followed by a Gladiator until 2024. I now want to switch to an electric scooter. My requirements are: Removable battery No hub motor Real-world range of 100+ km on a single charge Good and reliable after-sales service Please suggest suitable options.
Currently, the only electric scooters from a reputed manufacturer to have removable batteries are Hero MotoCorp's Vida V2 and VX2 models. These scooters come in a variety of variants to choose from depending on your styling, range, and price requirements. Take test rides of both before you make a decision.
Hi, I am 78kg, 5ft 10in tall, and live in a Tier 3 town. My average daily commute is around 12-13km, mostly on broken roads within the town, with a pillion rider for about 6km of the journey. I currently use a BS3 Hero scooter, which I purchased in 2016. With the current fuel prices, my fuel expense is around Rs 400 per week. Given my usage and riding conditions, should I consider switching to an electric scooter?
Since your commute - though short - is mostly on broken roads, we'd recommend shifting to a motorcycle for better ride comfort. Look at options like the Honda Shine 125, Hero Super Splendor Xtec and TVS Raider, which will offer a good step up from a smaller scooter both in terms of performance and comfort. We wouldn't advise you to shift to an electric vehicle because your daily run is quite low and to recoup the additional money you'll shell out over an ICE vehicle you will take many years.
