I have been using Maruti cars for more than 30 years and have been using the Ertiga Hybrid for the last 6.5 years. I now need to change from the Ertiga to a good 7-seater car, preferably not the Kia Carens, etc., and around the same budget as the Ertiga. The average should also be similar. Let me know your feedback. Thanks.

Since you've been a Maruti loyalist and don't want to consider the excellent Kia Carens Clavis at all, the only options you have are to either get another Maruti Suzuki Ertiga or opt for the Maruti XL6, which is essentially a 6-seater Ertiga with black interiors, some added features and a body cladding to visually give it a rugged look. Unfortunately, there are no other car-like, spacious 7-seaters in the market that price point.

I am looking to buy a 5+2-seater automatic petrol. I previously owned an Ertiga ZXi+. Now I want to upgrade to something a step above the Ertiga. I have considered the XUV 7XO, Clavis, Alcazar, Safari, and HyCross. My driving is mainly in the city, with highway trips during holidays. Hence, I prefer petrol.

The ideal upgrade for you would be the Kia Carens Clavis. It has all the positives from the Maruti Ertiga but in a much more premium package. The engine is more powerful, it is extremely practical, and despite being a 5+2 seater, it is easy to drive in the city. The third row space is also usable for adults, especially in city drives. On the highways, too, it offers a comfortable ride and a decent amount of room in the third row with all three rows up.  Being a Kia car, the equipment list is quite comprehensive, and you wouldn't miss many features with this MPV.
The Mahindra XUV 7XO is also good, but it is a bit too large for the city, and the third row space isn't as good or usable as the Kia's. The Hyundai Alcazar struggles with third-row room while carrying over the underpinnings of the Clavis. The Tata Safari isn't easy to use in the city, courtesy of its size and cramped third-row space, and the Toyota Innova HyCross, in its petrol-only guise, is quite inefficient and has to sacrifice a whole bunch of features too, unless you spend upwards of Rs 30 lakh and get the strong-hybrid version.
The Carens Clavis will tick all the necessary boxes and at a reasonable price point, making it the best pick for you.

What is the best automatic 7-seater SUV with good legroom available within a budget of around Rs 15 lakh?

There aren't many 7 seater automatics in your budget. Your best bet would be the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It is spacious enough, and even the third row is quite usable, with its own blower controls and air vents. At your budget, you would also get the top variant and thus have features like an automatic AC, a PM2.5 cabin air filter and a touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Please suggest a 7-seater car for the best family usage under ₹10-12 lakh.

The best 7-seater car you can buy in your budget is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It is spacious in all rows, even for adults, has a very comfortable ride that suits our roads well, and is easy to drive in the city, thanks to light steering.

The 1.5-litre petrol engine is refined and smooth, but at the same time quite efficient too. If fuel efficiency is a high priority, the Ertiga is also available with a CNG version that delivers excellent fuel economy. The Ertiga is also well equipped, with features like a touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a rear parking camera too.

I live in Bangalore and am looking to upgrade from my 2021 Ertiga ZXi+, which has run about 26,000km. I need the flexibility of three rows for different combinations of passengers and luggage, along with a petrol automatic transmission, cruise control, 360-degree camera, and high-quality interior trim, fit and finish. Balanced fuel economy is also important. I am not keen on large SUVs like the XUV700, Safari, Harrier, etc., and have ruled out two-row options like the Creta, as both boot space and passenger space are limited when carrying 5 or 6 adults. At the top of my list is the Hyundai Alcazar Signature turbo petrol DCT. I drive about 7,000km a year, 80% of which are long highway runs. I already have a Wagon R ZXi+ AT for short city trips. While I considered the XL6 seriously, I do not find it premium enough to be a true upgrade, though it is easier on the wallet to buy and maintain. I am looking for reassurance that the Alcazar will not be a bad buy, and to know if I may be missing out on other worthy contenders.

While the Hyundai Alcazar is a good SUV, it isn't the ideal pick for your needs. The Alcazar's third row is usable, but not the best. We feel the Kia Carens Clavis Turbo-DCT is a better match for you. It's got an upmarket interior that will feel like an upgrade from your Ertiga, and there are various features packed in.
What really furthers the Clavis' case, however, is its flexible seating. The middle row offers plenty of adjustment to maximise comfort or balance space for passengers in all three rows, as the case may be. Access to the third row is convenient, helped by the one-touch middle row fold and wide door aperture.
The Carens Clavis uses the same 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine as the Alcazar and performance is well taken care of for your highway journeys.

Hi. I drive a 2014 Ertiga diesel. I am 66 years old and wondering which vehicle I should change to. My current driving is about 250-300km of city driving per month and one outstation trip of about 200km once every three months. I am now looking for a 5-seater with ample boot space. Can you suggest a suitable option?

Without knowing your budget, it's hard to pinpoint exactly which car to recommend to you. However, given you're looking to upgrade from a 12-year-old Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, and given your requirements, we would recommend the MG Hector.
It's not a particularly flashy or exciting car, but when it comes to space for five, comfort and practicality, it is the best in its segment. The biggest highlight is its 587-litre boot, which is huge for the segment, and on top of that, it is incredibly comfortable as well.
If you don't mind a manual gearbox, the 2.0-litre diesel is strong and relatively efficient. If you want an automatic, however, you have to choose the petrol CVT, which is not very fuel efficient, but then your usage is quite low, so perhaps it won't be that much of an issue.

I want to purchase my first car, the Ertiga ZXi MT, for my family. Will it be value for money, or should I go for the ZXi+ MT? Also, I need your suggestion on how to deal with dealers during negotiations.

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is a good family car, and the ZXi MT is quite well-equipped. For an increment of Rs 80,000 (approximately), the ZXI+ variant gets additional kits like cruise control, reverse camera, and auto headlamps, among others. So, if you don't mind skipping these few features, the ZXI variant is a better value.
When it comes to negotiating with dealers, the key is to be well-informed and patient (don't rush into a deal). Approach multiple dealers, even if they're away from your place of residence. Understand what each of them is offering. Certain dealers might have the exact colour, variant in stock, hence they would be willing to negotiate more than others. Also, research online to find the best price for insurance, and ask the dealer to match it.

I have a 10-year-old Hyundai Grand i10 and want to upgrade to a 7-seater. I am confused between the Mahindra Scorpio-N and the Tata Safari. My budget is ₹15 lakh. Please advise.

Unfortunately, neither the Mahindra Scorpio N nor the Tata Safari is available in your budget of Rs 15 lakh, as even their base models start at around Rs 17 lakh, on road.

Instead, we recommend the Kia Carens Clavis, which is a surprisingly spacious and capable 6- or 7-seater. Quality levels are very high, there are good features on offer, and there are plenty of engine and gearbox options to choose from.

In your budget, you can go up to the HTE variant, with a choice of 1.5 petrol, 1.5 turbo petrol or 1.5 diesel engines. However, you can only have them with the manual gearbox; the automatic is out of your budget.

You could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which is an even better value for money.

I am looking for a 7-seater car under ₹13 lakhs with good comfort and road presence. Which car should I consider, and which variant would you suggest?

The best 7-seater SUV you can buy under Rs 13 lakh is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It is a very practical and spacious MPV that is also comfortable. The Ertiga's 103hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine is fuel-efficient, with a claimed mileage of 20.51kpl with a 5-speed manual and 20.3kpl with a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Depending on which gearbox you want, you should go for either the ZXI-manual (Rs 12.71 lakh, on-road, Delhi) or the VXI-automatic (Rs 13.04 lakh, on-road, Delhi). The VXI gets the basics like an audio system, manual AC, 6 airbags, projector headlamps and more. The ZXI adds niceties like an auto climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen, alloy wheels and much more.

I need a 7-seater car for my family. We drive more than 40 kilometres daily on village roads. Please suggest a good, fuel-efficient, and reliable car.

Given your requirements, you should go for the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The Ertiga has a spacious cabin and comes powered by a 103hp and 1.5-litre petrol engine. It has a claimed mileage of 20.51kpl with a 5-speed manual gearbox and 20.3kpl with a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

It can even be had in a CNG version that offers lower running costs than the petrol. Since the Ertiga is a Maruti product, it will also be reliable and stress-free to maintain. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga prices range from Rs 8.80 lakh to Rs 12.94 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
