Lotus Emeya

The Emeya R, especially in Stellar Black, looks like something out of Wayne Enterprises—stealthy, bold, and packed with presence. Its radical design rivals any Lamborghini, with sharp dual LED DRLs, active aero flaps, and smooth curves aiding aerodynamics. At over five meters long and two meters wide, it’s a dramatic shift from Lotus’s lightweight past. Aero-optimized 20-inch wheels, visible LiDAR panels, and a restrained yet striking rear with an active spoiler and carbon diffuser complete the look. Every angle demands attention, even if the car itself remains whisper-quiet.

The Emeya R’s EV-based design allows for excellent space management. The cabin feels roomy and premium, with high-quality materials and optional 'Magnetite' upholstery. Sporty, comfortable seats offer heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The interior blends carbon fibre, leatherette, and suede tastefully. A slim display shows vital driving data, while passengers get their own screen. Rear captain’s chairs (with the Executive Pack) recline and offer full comfort features. Space is generous, though taller passengers may find a knees-up position. Practicality is strong with ample storage, a 428L boot, 31L frunk, and a panoramic roof.

The Emeya R, with 918hp and a 102kWh battery, is one of India’s most powerful EVs, sharing its platform with the Eletre R SUV. It boasts 985Nm of torque and accelerates 0-100kph in 2.7 seconds under ideal conditions with optional Pirelli P-Zero tyres. Standard Michelin Pilot Sports struggle to handle this power, causing traction issues during launch. Its weight adds to the challenge, making the optional tyre upgrade advisable. Multiple drive modes—from aggressive Track to efficient Range—and a customizable Individual mode help manage its dynamics and improve control.

Lotus claims a 485km WLTP range for the Emeya R. Real-world numbers will vary depending on your driving mode and style. In our short stint, we couldn’t do a full range test, but you can expect around 350km on a full charge, provided you avoid hard launches and stick to ‘Range’ mode. It has four levels of regenerative braking controlled via paddle shifters. 0–100% on a 7.4kW AC charger takes 15 hrs 45 mins. On an 11kW AC charger takes 10 hrs 45 mins. Whereas 10–80% on a 150kW DC charger takes 35 mins and with a 350kW DC charger, which is not yet available in India, it can juice up in just 18 mins.

The Lotus badge promises sharp handling, rooted in founder Colin Chapman’s focus on lightness and precision. However, today’s Emeya R adds weight with tech, space, and battery, reducing agility. Drive modes help, but even in ‘Individual’ mode, weight affects cornering. At its lowest height with active roll stabilization, it stays flat but isn’t nimble. Steering feels confident but lacks Porsche Taycan’s balance. ‘Sport’ mode suits spirited driving; save ‘Track’ for the circuit. In ‘Tour’, suspension excels, offering firm yet comfortable highway rides. It’s a Hyper GT—but you’ll appreciate the “GT” more.

As dramatic outside as it is comfy inside, the Emeya R impresses with its equipment. Lotus spares no expense—luxury meets performance, even if it adds weight. Its standout feature? Automatic doors that open with a lever pull and close via brake, touchscreen, or tug. Inside, a 15-inch touchscreen handles nearly everything with a clean, intuitive UI. HVAC controls can be fiddly, but a 360° camera and 23-speaker KEF audio system more than make up for it. Rear passengers get tablet controls for seats, lights, massage, and the panoramic roof.

At ₹2.95 crore (ex-showroom), the Emeya R competes with supercars like the Porsche Taycan Turbo and its sibling, the Eletre R. Though far from Lotus’s traditional roots, it signals the brand’s future with luxury and performance. It’s powerful but feels heavy in corners. With standout looks and top-tier comfort and tech, it creates its own niche. The Emeya S offers 612hp, better range, and similar luxury, making it a smarter choice for those drawn to the Emeya’s design and presence.
