Lotus cars in India (3)

British sports car maker Lotus, owned by Geely, is renowned for its Formula 1 heritage and lightweight engineering. It entered India in November 2023 with the Eletre, its first electric SUV, and has since added the Emeya sedan and the Emira coupe. As per us at Autocar India, the Emira is the one that still feels like a proper Lotus. We find it gorgeous to look at and genuinely engaging to drive, and it's also the last combustion car the brand will build for a while. So if you want a Lotus petrol car, now's the time before the brand stops making them.

 

The Lotus Eletre and Emeya are a different story: both are seriously quick and loaded with tech. That said, as per us, the Eletre “isn't the best handling or most chuckable” SUV around, and the Emeya feels “very different to a petrolhead's idea of what a Lotus should be.”

 

There are 3 Lotus cars in India today, with prices starting at Rs 2.55 crore and going up to Rs 3.22 crore. The brand is genuinely mid-transition, so it's worth knowing which side you're buying into, a Lotus built the old way on petrol, or a Lotus built the new way on electric.

We find it gorgeous to look at and genuinely engaging to drive, and with Lotus moving to electric power from here, this won't be around much longer. It's priced steeply relative to its power, so this one's for buyers chasing the experience rather than the numbers

An electric SUV with serious performance and luxury

Lotus Eletre

As per us, this car would suit you if your priority is an electric SUV that combines serious performance with genuine luxury. It has up to 905hp on tap and a genuinely luxurious, comfortable cabin. It doesn't feel as sharp to drive as the Lotus name might suggest, though, so go in for the performance and presence rather than expecting sports-car dynamics in an SUV body

An electric performance sedan with genuine long-distance comfort

Lotus Emeya

​As per us, this car would suit you if your priority is an electric performance sedan that can cover long distances in comfort. It has more rear legroom than its natural rival, the Porsche Taycan, and a cabin built for exactly that. It is a big, 2.4-ton car, though, so it leans towards comfort and outright pace rather than the light, nimble character Lotus built its name on

I drove this car for 25 km, and my experience was great. The Lotus Emeya looks fantastic and is incredibly fast, powered by two electric motors with 905 hp. I really enjoyed driving it, and it's comfortable too. The exterior design is impressive. Overall, it's a great package. If you have 2.57 crores to spare, just go for it.
