Lotus Emira expert review

Autocar score

What is the Emira and why is it special? In short, itโ€™s a small, light, mid-engined sportscar โ€“ the sort of car that built Lotusโ€™ reputation. The layout dictates its striking form. Itโ€™s aggressive in parts, delicate in others, and wholly gorgeous. The aero elements are well integrated, and our favourite angle is the rear โ€“ home to a high-deck spoiler and purposeful dual exhausts.

Itโ€™s a fuss-free cabin that places everything within easy reach. Touchpoints are well finished, and you can spec it with some premium materials too. While snug, space is enough for two large adults. Practicality is reasonable for a sportscar, too, with useful cubbies, a 151-litre rear boot, and some space behind the seats for soft bags.

The Emiraโ€™s AMG-sourced 2.0-litre turbo-four makes 360hp and 430Nm. The engine pulls strongly through the revs, revs eagerly and sounds fantastic in the process. The 4.42s 0-100kph time is quick, and the 8-speed DCT responds well to paddle inputs. At low speeds, though, the gearbox can be a bit jerky.

Thereโ€™s also a 3.5-litre supercharged V6 option with more power and a 4.3s 0-100kph time, if you want something meatier.

Youโ€™d be expecting too much if you want a sportscar like the Emira to deliver on this front. Expect real-world mileage between 4-7kpl.

The steering is superb โ€“ hydraulically assisted, well-weighted, and communicative. Turn-in is sharp yet fluid, and the car feels confidence-inspiring through corners. Thereโ€™s enough grip, poise, and feedback to involve you completely. The ride is surprisingly absorbent for a sportscar, though you do feel the surface. Importantly for India, the Emira clears most speedbreakers, though the low nose demands caution.

You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Thankfully, climate control and drive modes get physical controls.

The Emira starts at Rs 3.22 crore, which is steep any which way you look at it. Itโ€™s not the most powerful for the money, but itโ€™s gorgeous, involving, and feels special โ€“ a true puristโ€™s sportscar. The kind we might not get for much longer.

Lotus Emira Images

Emiraโ€™s front section shows clear influence from Evija, Lotusโ€™s limited-production electric hypercar, especially in the headlamps and the sculpted bonnet scoops. Along the sides, the big intakes, short overhangs and broad haunches set the tone. At the back, the flat C-shaped LED lights are connected by a slim LED brake strip that sits atop the rear vents and the dual exhausts. Check out our Emira images gallery for more.
