I currently have 2017 Celerio AMT. I am looking for a small car with a smooth automatic transmission as an upgrade. My daily usage is just 20 kms and a monthly once long trip of around 200kms. Majority of the journey will be in city trafic. What are my best options under 10 Lakhs, and should I also consider the Punch ev.
If you are looking for a smooth automatic experience, a CVT is your best option. While most cars in this price range use an AMT like your Celerio, there are two options with CVTs – the Hyundai i20 and the Honda Amaze. Both these cars get 1.2-litre four-cylinder engines mated to CVT transmissions that are smooth and easy to use. Both have reasonably roomy cabins, but the Amaze has the advantage of a larger boot. It is also the newer car and therefore gets our vote.
With regard to your query about the Punch EV, there is no denying that it is a phenomenal city car. However, your limited commute of just 20km does not really justify an EV. Also, in our real-world test of the previous Punch EV we managed 216km on a full charge on the highway. The new Punch EV will improve on that with its larger battery pack, but the range might still be a limiting factor on your monthly road trips.
Before you decide, do take a test drive of all these cars.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Petrol-AMT is an excellent, user-friendly city car. The engine is smooth, refined and fuel-efficient. Do keep in mind that the drive experience with the AMT will not be nearly as seamless as your Micra CVT, however by AMT standards, the Nios' unit is quite smooth. So if you are on a tight budget, go for the Nios. But if you can extend your budget slightly, we'd highly recommend you to consider the Hyundai i20 Magna Petrol-IVT. Not only is the i20 a much bigger, more spacious and more premium offering, but its petrol-IVT combination is smooth and seamless, something as a Nissan Micra CVT owner, you will appreciate.

I am a 37-year-old self-employed male with two young kids. I loved the Virtus and decided to make it my first car. However, when I calculated the cost of ownership over 10 years, I felt I would be spending too much. My preference shifted towards the Hyundai i20 N Line after reading reviews that described it as a good driver’s car with ample rear space and decent boot space. Mileage is not a concern. My question is: will it satisfy me, or will I regret not getting the Virtus? If I choose the N Line, should I go for the manual or DCT? My usage will be 30% city and 70% highway.
If you have set your heart on the Volkswagen Virtus GT 1.5 TSI, we would strongly recommend you go for one. It is enjoyable to drive, and the 1.5 TSI engine elevates the drive experience manifold. Yes, the total cost of ownership will be higher than the Hyundai car; however, the smiles the Virtus delivers per kilometer makes it worth the stretch. It is one of those decisions that you buy with your heart, and it'll bring you a certain satisfaction each time you are behind the wheel of your car. You don't want to be in a state where you need to compromise, buy a car you're not too keen on getting, and regret your decision every time you see a VW Virtus GT.
That said, if the Virtus GT is a financial stretch you're not comfortable with, then the Hyundai i20 N Line is an excellent hatchback that's both practical and fun-to-drive. The manual gearbox is more engaging than the DCT, and if you don't have to deal with a lot of bumper-to-bumper city traffic, it is the one that we'd recommend.

Namaste Team. I own a Wagon R VXI 2015 and now wish to upgrade. We are a family of five, and my monthly driving is not more than 600 km. I am a driving enthusiast, and my budget is ₹13 lakh on-road. I do not want to consider Tata. My family has been associated with Maruti Suzuki for the past 30 years, but I am open to other brands.
If you're an enthusiast and a keen driver, your best bet is the Hyundai i20. It is a much larger hatchback than your Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, which should be comfortable for your family of five, and in your budget, you should get the fully loaded N8 variant too.
It is available with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT auto gearbox, and both are a good mix of fun and ease of use. However, it has to be said that the i20 is now starting to show its age, and fun as it is to drive, you may want to look at a more modern offering.
If so, check out the Skoda Kylaq, which is even more spacious and practical, but also comes with a punchy and enthusiastic 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. It's got great dynamics and a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox, if you want it. However, do note that it is more expensive, and you will have to settle for a mid-spec variant in your budget.

I want to buy a base-model car for city use. Please suggest which is better between the Hyundai Aura and i20 Era, or recommend another car in the same price segment.
The Hyundai Aura and i20 are powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is refined, peppy and fuel-efficient. They also use the same smooth 5-speed manual gearbox with a light clutch and steering. Both of these Hyundai cars are equally easy to drive too.
Go for the Aura if you need a big boot. Otherwise, the Hyundai i20 is the one to pick - it is well-built, its interior is nicer, the cabin is more spacious, and overall it is the better car.

I’m planning to buy the Hyundai i20 N Line N8 Manual. My monthly travel will be under 500 km. Will this car be economical in terms of maintenance costs and mileage? Also, should I wait for the upcoming i20 facelift or go ahead with the current model? Finally, should I choose the i20 N Line, or are there better alternatives I should consider? Please suggest.
The Hyundai i20 N Line is the sportiest hatchback for the money. It is powered by a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that's zippy, and its 6-speed manual transmission is slick in operation. Moreover, the N Line drives well and certainly feels more special than anything else in the market.
As far as maintenance costs go, the i20 N Line is likely to be slightly more expensive than the standard i20 petrol, but the difference should not be significant. In terms of fuel efficiency, the i20 N Line is likely to return around 10-12 kpl in the city and 15-17 kpl on the highway.
Sure, the N Line is a bit pricey, but it is more of an emotional buy. If you love to drive, go for it. However, if you are trying to rationalise this purchase, there are more affordable and more fuel-efficient, equally (if not more) practical hatchbacks that are cheaper to maintain, such as the Maruti Baleno/Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz, or even the standard i20 petrol.

I am in Bangalore and planning to buy my first automatic car as a new driver, with a budget of ₹10-12 lakh. I am confused between the Baleno AMT, i20 iVT and Sonet. Earlier, I was thinking of buying the Punch, but due to service issues, I am not considering it. The Exter AMT also seems like a good option.
Given your requirements, you should consider the Hyundai i20 IVT. Unlike the Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Exter which get AMTs, the i20 offers a more seamless drive experience thanks to the CVT automatic, which is smooth and user-friendly. The Sonet, meanwhile, comes with a DCT automatic, which is more jerky in stop-and-go traffic than the CVT.

For your parents’ usage, mainly for city driving with a focus on comfort, ease of use and long-term reliability, the Honda Amaze would be the better choice.
The Hyundai i20 is a premium hatchback and comes very well equipped, but it isn’t quite as effortless to live with as the Amaze. The Amaze’s 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with a CVT automatic is exceptionally smooth and predictable, which is exactly what you want in stop-go traffic. The CVT responds gently and progressively, making it very easy for elderly drivers to modulate throttle inputs without any jerks.
The i20 also offers a 1.2-litre petrol automatic, but it doesn’t feel as smooth or as relaxed as the Honda’s CVT in daily driving conditions.
Another important factor is accessibility. The Amaze is slightly easier to get in and out of, which can make a real difference for older occupants. The cabin also feels a touch more spacious and airy, adding to overall comfort.
Considering all these factors: smoothness, ease of driving, comfort and practicality, the Honda Amaze would be the more suitable and stress-free option in the long run.

The Honda Amaze is a no-nonsense, user-friendly compact sedan, with a smooth and responsive 1.2-petrol-CVT combination. Its large 416-litre boot gives it an advantage over the i20.
The Hyundai i20, on the other hand, feels distinctly more premium in terms of interior quality, as well as the equipment list. The i20's power delivery feels lazier than the Amaze's; however, it is much more refined in comparison. Moreover, the Hyundai also has broader, more supportive seats. Hence, for your parents, we'd recommend the i20 IVT for the more polished user experience it delivers.
That said, Honda and Hyundai are known for their service support and reliability, hence your ownership experience is likely to be trouble-free by opting for either of these two cars.
