Maruti Suzuki has been gearing up to introduce the all-new Celerio since a few months, and while the launch is now just around the corner (November 10), we’ve got our hands on fresh details about its engine and gearbox. Sources tell us that the new Celerio will feature the K10C petrol engine under its hood.

  • Next-gen Celerio to come with new K10C engine
  • Will feature Dual-Jet technology
  • Expected to be the most fuel efficient hatchback in its class

New Maruti Suzuki K10C petrol engine: what’s new?

The K10C engine in its naturally aspirated form has been on duty on multiple Suzuki cars overseas including the previous-gen Celerio. The same engine coupled with a turbocharger was earlier available on the Baleno RS in India.

This powerplant comes with DualJet technology that made its debut on the Baleno's 1.2-litre K12N engine a few years ago.

The Suzuki DualJet engine technology features two fuel injectors per cylinder instead of one. What this means is that each of the eight intake ports in the 16-valve engine gets its own injector, instead of every cylinder's two intake ports having to share one; this results in more precise control and finer fuel atomisation. It also features an improved exhaust gas recirculation system, among other upgrades.

The new DualJet K10C unit will continue to come with a three-cylinder layout, but is expected to get a slight power bump as well. However, the big news is, thanks to this new engine, the new Celerio is expected to be one of the most fuel efficient hatchbacks in the segment, giving around 26kpl. The current benchmark for fuel efficiency is held by the Tata Tiago AMT, at 23.84kpl .

The K10C engine-equipped new Celerio will come mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT automatic. The hatchback is expected to come with multiple variants that will feature cosmetic and equipment differences. The second-gen Celerio is a grounds-up new model and will sit on the modular Heartect platform, similar to other models like the Wagon R. It also gets completely new exterior and interior design and is expected to be slightly bigger than its predecessor.

Contrary to earlier reports, the Celerio will not come with a 1.2-litre engine and will instead get the new 1.0-litre K10C as the sole powerplant on offer. Expect more details on the new Celerio to trickle down as the launch nears.

Maruti Suzuki line-up: 2021 and beyond

Apart from the Celerio, Maruti Suzuki is readying updates to many models like the BalenoErtiga, XL6 and the Vitara Brezza, along with a few CNG variants.
