The ASEAN NCAP has released the crash test results for the Indonesia-spec Renault Kwid. The model received an overall score of 24.68 points from three categories and was rated a zero-star car by the safety rating programme.

The Kwid obtained 10.12 points (of a maximum 36) in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) derived from its frontal offset crash test. In Child Occupant Protection (COP), it scored 14.56 points (of a maximum 49), while it failed to score any points in the 18-point Safety Assist Technologies (SAT) category. ASEAN NCAP gives 50 percent weightage to AOP and 25 percent each to COP and SAT in its final rating.

The Kwid used for testing featured a driver’s side airbag but little else. The NCAP’s Safety Assist Technologies category includes ratings for the presence of ABS, ESC, seatbelt reminders, blind-spot assistance tech, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and forward collision warning systems.

The Kwid has been tested by NCAP on multiple occasions in the past. The India-made car was rated zero stars in May 2016 but saw marginal improvements earning one star in September 2016, following safety updates by Renault. In November 2017, Latin NCAP rated the Brazil-made Kwid at three stars. Note, NCAP’s scoring methodology and criteria are updated periodically.

Since its launch in 2015, the made-in-India Kwid has been updated for better crash-worthiness. A driver-side airbag and front seat belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters are options on the top-spec Kwid RXTs. Autocar India has learned that Renault will make further tweaks to the Kwid and there is talk of a comprehensive safety package upgrade with the arrival of the facelifted model that is expected in 2019.
