Premium midsize SUVs helped MG Motor India establish its brand in the country, and the company is bringing the focus back on that segment by developing a new midsize platform for global markets, including India.

    1. New MG platform to spawn multiple bodystyles
    2. Will come with hybrid and electric powertrains
    3. Expected to launch in China this year

The new midsize platform will underpin a range of body styles and accommodate multiple powertrains. This all-new platform will spawn a Hector-sized SUV, an Innova-sized MPV and even a Honda Civic-sized sedan with petrol, strong-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric options. Vehicles based on this platform will launch in China first sometime this year, and hit our streets between 2025 and 2027.

New MG midsize EVs to have shock pricing

Autocar India has learnt that MG India is targeting a big shocker in terms of pricing for EVs based on the new platform. The midsize SUV, which is understood to have more interior space than the Hector, is likely to start at around Rs 20 lakh; the Innova-rivalling all-electric MPV is rumoured to hit the market with just a Rs 25 lakh price tag; and the EV sedan could be priced below Rs 20 lakh.

New production facility coming up at Halol

All three EVs could be the first to be manufactured at MG Motor’s new production facility near the existing Halol plant for which the scouting process is underway. The new plant will help MG Motor more than double its capacity to 3 lakh units, with the all-new midsize platform likely to contribute to a volume of about 1 lakh units per year.

New MG midsize line-up to have hybrids

MG's plans of offering a strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid option shows that despite a strong emphasis on its EV business, MG is not losing sight of its ICE portfolio. However, they need to have some form of electrification to meet all future emissions requirements, especially CAFE norms.

MG Motor India: what else is in store?

Apart from this midsize platform, MG Motor India will also bring two more compact models on the 260 EV platform that's related to the Comet. These include an all-new EV MPV based on the Wuling Cloud and a new 5-door SUV based on the Yep Plus. You can read more on that here.
