McLaren has teased the name and power output of its upcoming 750S successor, which is expected to be called the McL 820 and produce 820hp. The new hybrid supercar is due to arrive next year and will be the brand’s first new series-production model since its acquisition by Abu Dhabi investment fund L’imad.

The name was revealed through a publicity display in London’s Covent Garden, where McLaren placed a large sculpture of its kiwi mascot carrying the ‘McL 820’ moniker. The name follows the format used by the limited-run McL 6GT, hinting that the brand could adopt this naming convention across its core line-up.

McLaren McL 820 to replace the 750S

The McL 820 will replace the 750S, which is due to be retired next year after a decade on sale. The model has also been sold in its earlier 720S form and as the limited-run 788HS. McLaren recently announced that it was taking final orders for the current model.

The new supercar will use one of two hybrid powertrains that McLaren is developing and producing in-house for the first time. These are expected to be V8-based, with the 820 designation likely referring to its power output in metric horsepower, in keeping with the brand’s naming convention.

With an expected output of 820hp, the new model will become one of McLaren’s most powerful series-production cars yet. Its power output would put it in the same broad bracket as the Ferrari 12Cilindri and Aston Martin Vanquish, as well as mid-engined rivals such as the Ferrari 296 and Lamborghini Temerario.

McLaren plans wider model expansion

The McL 820 is part of a broader product expansion at McLaren. The company is building a second factory in the UK and plans to start assembling its own engines in-house, alongside developing new models.

The new supercar is expected to arrive as McLaren phases out the Artura V6 supercar and the GT. The company has yet to announce replacements for either model. However, chief operating officer Michael Straughan has said it does not plan to pause production between model generations.

McLaren’s future line-up will be based on three pillars: traditional supercars, a front-engined SUV and limited-run Ultimate Series models such as the W1.
