Maurti Suzuki has announced today that its WagonR hatchback has achieved a sales milestone by selling 2 million units in the past 18 years.

First introduced in 1999, the WagonR is one of the best-selling vehicles in India and has nearly always featured on the monthly list of top 10 cars by sales.

The WagonR sold 14,571 units in August 2017 compared to 13,907 during August last year.

These sales figures have been helped thanks in part to its potential as a taxi and fleet vehicle and that Maruti has continuously upgraded the model with features such as dual airbags, multiple fuel options, ABS and an AMT gearbox.

The model took 133 months to reach the one million sales mark, which it achieved in 2011, after which it took just 79 months to hit the 2 million mark.

Maruti claims that nearly 45 percent of WagonR cutomers are first-time buyers, while 20 percent have purchased the car multiple times. The Indian brand has also said that markets such Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Ahmedabad have seen strong demand for the model, with the automated manual version accounting 16 percent of sales.

With this milestone, Wagon R becomes the third model in the country after the Maruti 800 and Alto, to cross two million in cumulative sales.
