  3. Production to be ramped up further to cope with demand

Mahindra Thar sales analysis

What has clicked for the second-generation Thar in its 3-door avatar is its impeccable off-road prowess while retaining everyday usability, thanks to its modern interior, features, relatively easy driving manners and automatic transmission options.

In the first seven months of FY2025, the Thar and Thar Roxx have together sold a total of 42,726 units, which constitutes 19.60 percent year-on-year growth (April-October 2023: 35,723 units) and is already 65 percent of the Thar’s total FY2024 wholesales of 65,246 units. The Thar Roxx has helped accelerate demand and widen the target audience as a more practical and mainstream product than the already popular Thar 3-door.

Mahindra Thar and Thar Roxx sales split

A quick clue as to how the Thar Roxx has revved up demand lies in the sharply increased monthly dispatches, following its reveal and launch on August 14. Customer deliveries began on October 12, which meant the company had ensured its showrooms were well-stocked with the Roxx, both in September and October.

As per SIAM data, in September, Mahindra despatched 8,843 Thar SUVs, of which, 3,911 were 3-door and 4,932 were Roxx, to its dealers. This marks the highest monthly dispatch for the Thar brand since its launch four years ago, surpassing the previous record of 6,160 units set in April 2024.

Mahindra Thar sales cross 2 lakh units

The marked increase in the Thar brand’s wholesales have resulted in Mahindra scaling a new monthly high for two straight months. In September 2024, at 51,062 units, Mahindra went past the 50,000 units monthly mark for the first time, and followed it up in October with 54,504 units, which sets a new monthly benchmark. The two Thars have contributed 17 percent and 14.57 percent in September and October 2024, respectively.

In view of the strong demand for the new Thar Roxx, the company has expanded manufacturing capacity for the model. Currently, Mahindra has a monthly output of 6,500 units for the Thar and Thar Roxx combined, and plans to further take it up to 9,500 units per month.
