Hyundai’s Ioniq has been awarded the Women’s World Car of the Year 2017 award, along with bagging a win in the Green Car category as well.
The jury, made up of 25 respected women motoring writers from 20 different countries, including Autocar India’s Renuka Kirpalani, chose the Mazda CX-5 as its Family Car of the Year, the Ford Fiesta as its Budget Car, Peugeot’s 3008 as its SUV/Crossover and the BMW 5-series as its Best Luxury Car.
The new Honda Civic Type R edged out the Mazda MX-5 RF and BMW M2 Coupe for the crown in the Performance Car category.
The Holly Reich Dream Car award, dedicated to the memory of one of the original judges for the Women’s Car of the Year award, saw McLaren win its second consecutive victory, with the 720S winning this year (the 570S got it in 2016).
Women’s World Car of the Year CEO, Sandy Myhre, said at the occasion, “The car that wins the Supreme award has gone through a rigorous test by 25 judges from 20 different countries that are on the panel of Women’s World Car of the Year. It’s a democratic process and cars that have won categories and the supreme winner really have to stand out.”
The vote is carried out by the jury by first nominating 420 cars and then whittling it down to 60. The judges then vote via a secret ballot by allocating points to each one.
This is the eighth edition of the Women’s World Car of the Year Awards.
Previous overall winners include the Jaguar F-Pace in 2016, Volvo’s XC90 in 2015, the Mercedes-Benz S-class in 2014 and Ford’s Fiesta EcoBoost in 2013.
