A BYD Sealion 6 test mule has been spotted testing in India, which the carmaker may be considering to launch here. The Sealion 6 is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and BYD could be looking at it as a rival to JSW Motors' upcoming Jetour T2-based PHEV SUV. BYD India had also shown the Sealion 6 at the 2025 Auto Expo to gauge interest. Since BYD currently sells only EVs in India, the Sealion 6 would bring a new powertrain option to its line-up if it goes on sale here.

  1. BYD claims a maximum range of 1,092km for the Sealion 6
  2. It offers features like a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen and panoramic sunroof

In markets like Australia, the Sealion 6 is offered with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol engine options. Both can be paired with either an 18.3kWh or 26.6kWh battery pack. The naturally aspirated-hybrid setup makes 218hp and sends power to the front wheels only. The turbo-petrol hybrid is available in 324hp and 344hp tunes, and all-wheel drive is standard. BYD claims a combined driving range of up to 1,092km.

The Sealion 6 measures 4,775mm in length, 1,890mm in width and 1,670mm in height, with a 2,765mm wheelbase. That makes it slightly smaller (overall) than the international-spec Jetour T2, which measures 4,785mm in length, 2,006mm in width and 1,875mm in height, with a 2,800mm wheelbase.

Compared with the BYD Sealion 7 sold in India, the Sealion 6 has a more conventional SUV shape. Up front, it gets Sealion 7-style headlights and DRLs, but the bumper is different. The side profile has regular door handles and cladding around the wheel arches and lower body. At the back, it gets connected LED tail-lamps and a large spoiler.

BYD Sealion 6 interior and features

Inside, the Sealion 6 gets a dual-tone cabin, offered in tan and black or off-white and black, with silver trim on the dashboard and centre console. It also gets a three-spoke steering wheel and leatherette upholstery. The dashboard is dominated by a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen, while the driver gets a 12.3-inch LCD unit.

Poll of the month

What do you think about the push for ethanol blends even higher than E20 petrol?

Good move; it cuts dependence on crude oil imports
I support it as it’s a greener solution than pure petrol
I’ll accept it only if it’s cheaper than E20 petrol
I am concerned about damage to my vehicle
Not good; fuel efficiency will drop even further
