Global NCAP has crash tested two made-in-India cars – Maruti Ertiga and Renault Triber – for the African market. The two MPVs have been crash tested under the Safer Cars for Africa campaign, and scored one and two stars, respectively.

  1. Ertiga scores one star in latest GNCAP crash test
  2. Triber gets a two-star safety rating
  3. Score does not apply to models sold in India

Africa-spec Maruti Ertiga Global NCAP score explained

Africa spec Maruti Ertiga, Renault Triber score poorly in GNCAP crash tests

The Africa-spec Maruti Ertiga secured a one-star rating for adult occupant protection (AOP) in Global NCAP’s crash test, scoring 23.63 points out of 34. It received two stars in the child occupant protection (COP) test after being awarded 19.40 points out of 49. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and deemed capable of withstanding further loadings.

Do note that the India-spec Ertiga scored three stars each in AOP and COP, however, it was tested as per Global NCAP’s older protocols.

The Renault Triber scored 22.29 points out of 34 in AOP and 19.99 out of 49 in COP, receiving two stars for both. Similar to the Ertiga sold in Africa, the Triber’s bodyshell was also rated as unstable and not capable of withstanding any further loadings.

In contrast, the Renault Triber sold in India received a four-star safety rating from Global NCAP back in 2021. Again, the Triber was also crash tested by Global NCAP as per its previous norms under the Safer Cars for India campaign. Although the testing method for both campaigns are similar, it does not conclude that the latest scores apply to the Maruti Ertiga and Renault Triber sold in India.

India has now moved on to its very own Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP), which took over from the Global NCAP for conducting crash tests and awarding a score to cars sold in the country. Bharat NCAP has so far tested four SUVs.
