Hero MotoCorp Xtreme 250R

The Xtreme 250R has a striking design with plenty of visual presence, but it does not all come together as neatly as it could. The motorcycle has a muscular look, although some areas feel busy and overstyled. Closer inspection also reveals that it feels built to a cost in places, with untidy welds and rough finishes in some sections. However, key touchpoints such as the switchgear feel reasonably good.

The riding position is neutral and comfortable but the firm suspension gives the ride a hard edge, particularly at lower speeds. However, the ride improves as speeds rise or when ridden by a heavier rider, but overall it is not as plush as some rivals in the segment.

The 249cc engine pulls cleanly from low revs, has a good spread of torque and rewards you for revving it close to the redline. While performance is not lacking, refinement still needs work and the test bike had noticeable vibrations through the seat, tank and footpegs.

The firm suspension works well with the trellis frame to create an enjoyable handling package. The Xtreme 250R feels light, agile and predictable through corners, responding well to rider inputs. 

The Xtreme 250R comes with all-LED lighting, a simple monochrome LCD display and dual-channel ABS with two modes. While the equipment list covers the basics, a TFT or colour LCD display would have suited the top variant better.

The Xtreme 250R offers a good balance of performance, handling and value. The engine is strong, the chassis is confidence inspiring and the pricing is competitive. Better refinement, improved ride comfort and higher quality levels would have made the package even stronger.
