Upcoming Royal Enfield Himalayan 452 to get 40hp engine

There has been a steady stream of leaks of the highly anticipated Himalayan 450, and the latest one gives us some important details.

1. The bike could be called the Himalayan 452
2. The new liquid-cooled engine displaces 451.65cc
3. Peak power is 40.02hp

A government homologation document has revealed some interesting details about the upcoming Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. First, the bike is referred to as the Himalayan 452 in the document, which is in line with the current Himalayan 411. The name is derived from the fact that it gets an all-new 451.65cc engine.

The other big detail is that this engine will produce 29.44kW at 8,000rpm, which translates to 40.02hp. The higher rpm at which it produces its peak power shows that this engine will be happier to rev higher than the current Himalayan, which makes its 24.3hp at 6,500rpm.

Interestingly, the new Triumph Speed 400 makes a similar 40hp at the same 8,000rpm. The Triumph motor has a very strong mid range, but it is likely that the new Himalayan will offer better bottom-end torque to go with its off-roading pedigree. The Triumph engine is a DOHC unit and while not currently confirmed, it is quite likely that Royal Enfield will stick with an SOHC architecture for the valve train.

The document also reveals that the Himalayan 452 will have a 1,510mm wheelbase, which is a big increase over the current Himalayan 411’s 1,465mm wheelbase. Length has increased from 2,190mm to 2,245mm and width has also gone up from 840mm to 852mm – 900mm if the bike has the optional handguards installed.

All these increases are in line with the spy images, which suggest that the new Himalayan looks larger than the bike it replaces. It will be interesting to see what RE can manage with the weight and how much of a difference there will be to the current bike’s 199kg.
