A few days ago, there were spurious reports that the Kawasaki Ninja 500 was headed for discontinuation due to not being E20-compliant and slower sales owing to its high price. However, India Kawasaki Motors, whether intentionally or by sheer happenstance, has launched the 2026 Ninja 500 at Rs 5.76 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The bike remains mechanically unchanged, with the only differences being Kawasaki’s signature green colour and E20 compliance.

  1. Continues to be mechanically unchanged
  2. Now comes in Kawasaki’s signature green colour
  3. Brought to India as a CBU, which drives its price up

2026 Kawasaki Ninja 500: A quick recap

It is a fundamentally simple motorcycle but a rather expensive one

The Ninja 500 is powered by a 451cc twin-cylinder liquid-cooled engine developing 45hp at 10,000rpm and 42.6Nm of torque at 7,500rpm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a slip/assist clutch. This unit is nestled within a steel trellis frame suspended by a telescopic fork (120mm travel) and a monoshock (130mm travel). Unlike most rivals that use a USD fork, the Ninja uses a right-way-up fork, and that trait of simplicity continues to the feature set as well. Aside from a slip/assist clutch and a Bluetooth-compatible negative LCD display, the Ninja 500 has no frills to boast of – depending on your preferences, this might be the exact reason to avoid it or pursue it.

The Ninja 500 has a sole rider aid – dual-channel ABS – and this system cannot be switched off, even at the rear. Stopping duties are handled by a 310mm disc mated to an axially mounted caliper at the front and a 220mm disc at the rear. The Ninja 500 rolls on a pair of 17-inch rims, shod with Dunlop Sportmax tyres sized 110/70-R17 up front and 150/60-R17 at the rear.

While most small-capacity sportbikes have become increasingly more committed in terms of their riding position, the Ninja 500’s rider’s triangle is refreshingly upright, with a small hint of sportiness, and at 785mm, its perch is very approachable as well. Weighing 171kg with its 14-litre fuel tank brimmed, the Ninja 500 is quite a light machine; for context, the Aprilia RS 457 is 4 kilos heavier.

None of this is different from the 2025 model, but for 2026, the Ninja 500 comes in Kawasaki’s signature green colourway and is compatible with E20 petrol. What also (sadly) continues is the Ninja 500’s obscenely expensive price point. At Rs 5.76 lakh (ex-showroom, India), it now costs Rs 10,000 more and is far more expensive than its direct rival, the Aprilia RS 457 (Rs 4.22 lakh to Rs 4.37 lakh). Unlike most other Kawasaki bikes that come to India as CKD (completely knocked down) units, the Ninja 500 arrives as a CBU (completely built unit). Add to that the government’s punishing 40 percent GST on two-wheelers above 350cc, and the Ninja 500’s pricing starts to make sense – although it is exceedingly tough to justify.
