Hyundai Aura vs rivals: price, specifications comparison

While SUVs continue to remain the favourite body type in the market, compact sedans do pull in decent numbers. In fact, the Maruti Dzire regularly features on the monthly top 10 bestselling cars in India. We see how the four compact sedans – the aformentioned Dzire, the Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze and Tata Tigor – fare, on paper.

In terms of size, the Hyundai Aura sits in the middle of the pack

Naturally, all four sedans here are less than 4 metres in length, though the Tigor’s 3,993mm figure is the smallest here; the Tata is also the narrowest of the lot, just 3mm less than the Aura’s 1,680mm figure. Maruti’s compact sedan is the widest model in this comparison, measuring 40mm more than the Amaze. The Tigor’s 1,532mm height and 170mm ground clearance make it the tallest compact sedan, while the Amaze is the shortest at 1,501mm.

The Honda Amaze’s wheelbase is the longest here – 20mm longer than the other three – while the Tigor is the only one to have a kerb weight of over 1 tonne. Coming to the boot space, the Dzire’s 382-litre unit is the smallest, while the Amaze leads with a 420-litre boot. It should be noted that all also come with a CNG option, which eats into luggage capacity, though the Tigor is the only one that gets a space-saving dual-cylinder CNG cylinder. All four sedans get 15-inch alloy wheels in their respective top-spec forms.

Amaze is the most powerful, but the Aura has the most torque

All four compact sedans are offered with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, although the Dzire and Tigor get three-cylinder units while the Amaze and Aura have four-cylinder engines.  Although a 5-speed manual gearbox is standard on all models, the Tigor, Dzire and Aura come with an AMT option, while the Amaze is the only one to offer a CVT.

The Honda’s 1.2-litre petrol engine is the most powerful one here, but it has the lowest torque output. With 113.8Nm, the Hyundai Aura has the highest torque output here, followed by the Tigor and Dzire. Speaking of the Maruti, it is the least powerful model here, but has the highest ARAI effieicny figures – 24.79kpl for the manual and 25.71kpl with the AMT. The Hyundai is the next most frugal model here, with the Amaze sitting at the bottom of the fuel efficiency comparison.

Tigor CNG is the most powerful, but the least efficient

Hyundai, Maruti and Tata all offer their respective compact sedans with a factory-fit CNG kit, while Honda offers a dealer-level CNG fitment, which is why output and efficiency figures for the Amaze CNG are not available. When run on CNG, the Tigor’s 1.2-litre engine makes the most power, while the Dzire’s unit produces the most torque and is also the most efficient. Meanwhile, the Aura CNG is the least powerful model here by a small margin, but has the second largest CNG tank. The Tigor CNG is the only one here to come with an automatic option, and it also has the largest fuel carrying capacity.

Aura is the most affordable CNG compact sedan

In petrol form, the Tata Tigor is the most affordable compact sedan on sale in India, with prices starting at Rs 6 lakh for the manual versions, and at Rs 7.35 lakh for the automatics. However, the Hyundai Aura CNG’s Rs 7.55 lakh-9.11 lakh price range makes it the most affordable CNG compact sedan. Meanwhile, the Honda Amaze is by far the most expensive model here, and although the Japanese brand has yet to reveal official prices for the CNG conversion, dealer sources say it will cost about Rs 1 lakh over the corresponding petrol trim, cementing its position as the most expensive compact sedan.
