What are the Maruti Grand Vitara engine options?
Petrol, strong hybrid and CNG
The Grand Vitara is available with three core engine options: a 103hp 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated mild-hybrid petrol, an 89hp 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol-CNG and a 116hp (combined) 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol-hybrid. Of these, only the Grand Vitara CNG variants don’t get an automatic gearbox option, offering a 5-speed manual as the sole transmission.
Grand Vitara petrol offers AWD
On the other hand, the Grand Vitara hybrid comes only with an e-CVT automatic gearbox, with no manual option. The Grand Vitara petrol variants can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter auto, and notably, you can opt for an all-wheel-drive layout with the latter in the Alpha and Alpha(O) trims.

The Grand Vitara hybrid delivers an ARAI-claimed mileage of 27.97kpl, the highest figure of the range. Our real-world efficiency tests of the Grand Vitara hybrid revealed a mileage of 23.77kpl in city conditions and 20.39kpl on the highway, working out to an average of 22.08kpl. Meanwhile, the Grand Vitara CNG offers a claimed mileage of 26.6km/kg.
Petrol mileage is up to 21.11kpl
As for the Grand Vitara petrol, claimed mileage figures stand at 21.11kpl for the manual, 20.58kpl for the torque converter and 19.20kpl for the petrol-auto AWD variants. We’ve tested the real-world mileage of the Grand Vitara petrol-auto FWD, and it returned 11.6kpl in the city and 15.3kpl on the highway, making for an average of 13.45kpl.
Should you buy Maruti Grand Vitara hybrid or petrol?
Hybrid makes more sense for mileage-minded buyers

As explained above, if you’re looking to buy a petrol variant and fuel efficiency is a big concern for you, the Grand Vitara hybrid is undoubtedly the better pick. It also develops 15hp more, and compared to the top-spec petrol variant, the Grand Vitara hybrid’s range-topping Alpha+(O) trim gets additional features, such as drive modes (Eco, Normal and Power), all-black interior upholstery with champagne gold trim and a courtesy lamp.
Grand Vitara petrol has more boot space and is cheaper
However, the Grand Vitara petrol gets the option of AWD, a larger 373-litre boot (boot space in the hybrid version is 265 litres), and crucially, more affordable pricing. The Grand Vitara petrol’s top-spec Alpha(O) AllGrip trim costs Rs 19.64 lakh – Rs 88,000 less than the equivalent hybrid trim level – and the delta widens to Rs 3.06 lakh when you compare the cheapest petrol-auto and hybrid variants. Additionally, the Grand Vitara petrol’s torque converter auto gearbox can be smoother than the hybrid’s e-CVT in some situations.
Is the Maruti Grand Vitara bigger than the Hyundai Creta?

The Grand Vitara is 4,345mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,645mm high, with a 2,600mm wheelbase – making it 15mm longer, 5mm wider and 10mm taller than the Hyundai Creta, which has a 10mm longer wheelbase.
Is Maruti Grand Vitara better than Brezza?
Grand Vitara is bigger and offers more space inside
The Grand Vitara is positioned above the Brezza in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio. Moreover, the Grand Vitara has a 350mm length and 100mm wheelbase advantage over the Brezza, translating to a fair bit of extra interior room. It’s worth noting, though, that the Grand Vitara petrol variants are powered by the same engine as the Brezza. This engine feels a tad underpowered in the larger and heavier Grand Vitara and is better suited for the lighter and smaller Brezza.
Brezza top variant costs as much as a lower-level Grand Vitara trim
The Grand Vitara, expectedly, gets more features than the Brezza, such as a larger sunroof, a powered driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, a cabin air purifier, and more. However, the Brezza has price on its side, with its top-spec ZXI+ AT variant coming in at Rs 13.98 lakh.
At this price point, you can only go for one of the Grand Vitara’s lower variants, which will be mostly on par with the Brezza in terms of features. So, if you’re on a similar budget and space isn’t a major consideration for you, a fully loaded Brezza makes more sense than an entry-level Grand Vitara.
