Seven-seater SUVs with a diesel powertrain appeal to those with large families, as they have plenty of torque to carry a full load of passengers. If we were to look at the top five most affordable seven-seater diesel SUVs, offerings from Mahindra and Tata Motors make it to the list. 5. Mahindra XUV 7XO

The Mahindra XUV 7XO and offers a 7-seater layout across variants: AX, AX3, AX5, AX7, AX7 T and AX7 L. Speaking of powertrain, the 7XO's 2.2-litre motor puts out 185hp and 420Nm with the 6MT (450Nm with 6AT), the highest peak output figures here. As before, an AWD option is offered as well, albeit in higher trims.

Standing out as the only non-Mahindra model on this list is the Tata Safari, the homegrown brand's ICE flagship SUV. Arranged from base to top, the 7-seater variants of the Safari are: Smart, Pure X, Adventure X+, Accomplished X, Accomplished X+ and Accomplished Ultra. Under the hood, the Safari has a 170hp, 350Nm 2-litre diesel engine, which can be paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 6-speed automatic transmission (AT).

3. Mahindra Scorpio N

Next up is the Mahindra Scorpio N, which has a slightly more affordable entry point than the XUV7XO and Safari. Scorpio N diesel variants are: Z2, Z4, Z6, Z8 T, Z8, Z8 T and Z8 L. While RWD is the standard setup on the Scorpio N, the Z4, Z8 T and Z8 L variants can be had with a 4WD system. The Scorpio N diesel is powered by a 2.2-litre engine generating 132hp, 300Nm (RWD) and 175hp, 400Nm (4WD). Transmission options include a 6MT and a 6AT.

2. Mahindra Scorpio Classic

Another popular model from the Indian SUV specialist is the Scorpio Classic. Mahindra currently sells its Scorpio Classic in S and S11 variants, and the former can even be optioned in a 9-seater layout. The Scorpio uses a 132hp, 300Nm 2.2-litre diesel engine mated to a 6MT. Unlike the SUVs above it, no AT option is available.

At number one, the Mahindra Bolero and Bolero Neo siblings are currently the most affordable diesel 7-seater SUVs in India. The standard Bolero is offered in B4, B6, B6 (O) and B8 variants, all of which feature a 76hp, 210Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine mated to a 5MT.

The same three-cylinder diesel motor is tuned to generate peak outputs of 100hp and 260Nm in the relatively more modern and premium Mahindra Bolero Neo, available in N4, N8, N10 (R), N10 (O) and N11 variants. Notably, an automatic transmission choice is absent here as well and just a 5MT is on offer.
